With the launch of GPT-4o earlier this year, Open AI made most of its paid features free for the first time, including image analysis, coding, and the use of custom GPTs. GPT-4o is the most powerful model on the platform and is also available to free users (although with a limited amount of daily usage) image generation was not included in that list.
ChatGPT does most of the work, so it is easy to use; as OpenAI writes in X, "Just ask ChatGPT to create an image of your slide deck, personalize your friend's card, and show you what something looks like."
If not as descriptive as possible, ChatGPT will fill in the gaps based on its own training dates. If you want your card to be a cat, specify that fact. Also, the text rendering is still not perfect, but enclosing words in double quotes makes it more accurate.
Free users can now create images, but they are limited to two images per day, so if you want to create multiple revisions or an entire comic book's worth of images, you will need to find another platform or pay the $20/month Pro.
Earlier this year, OpenAI announced its goal of getting the most powerful artificial intelligence technology into the hands of as many people as possible.
To achieve that goal, the company gave free users many of the features that Pro subscribers took for granted, including the ability to use custom chatbots and a range of features created by third parties.
The biggest change was that instead of using the GPT-3.5 of two years ago, users finally had access to the most powerful model, in this case GPT-4o. This model has since been beaten in benchmarks by models running on smartphones.
Free users also have access to the upload function. This allows them to use GPT-4o's AI vision and analysis capabilities to see the details of uploaded images and outline what they contain. My favorite way to use it is to give it an ingredient and let it suggest a recipe.
