Nintendos 2 Signs of Major Power Upgrade to Rival Steam Deck

Nintendo has already confirmed that the next console it makes will be in the Switch family. Unfortunately, the company hasn't given us much else regarding the Switch 2. And now, the leaky informants are coming together and bringing us a bit of information. According to the latest leaks, Nintendo is pushing so much power that the console needs a second cooler and a 60W charger.

The leaker, posting on Nintendo's popular "Famiboards" message board, claims to have seen shipping manifests showing upgraded features for the new console. Of course, this sort of thing could be fabricated, but based on existing leaks about the Switch 2's specs, it makes sense that the device would need additional cooling and a larger power supply.

Interestingly, the rumored additional cooler is reportedly located in the dock, not the portable console itself. This has led fans to speculate that it will offer better graphics and performance than the original Switch did, but that remains to be seen.

As for the charger, 60W would allow for more rapid charging. Currently the Switch can use power adapters up to 39W, but charging is rated at about 18W, which is relatively slow compared to many modern devices. If this rumor is true, the Steam Deck will charge at 45W, which would put the Switch 2 ahead of popular portable PCs in raw charging speed.

So far, leaked specs on the Switch 2 include an NVIDIA Tegra 239 SoC with Ampere GPU architecture and 12GB of RAM. The game card is rumored to be a Samsung 5th generation V-NAND with a read speed of up to 1.4 GB/s. It is expected to support NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction for significantly sharper visual output than the current Switch It is expected to output significantly sharper visuals than the current Switch.

On The Moore's Law Is Dead Broken Silicon podcast, Matthew Cassells of Alderon Games discussed the power of the Switch 2 and said it may be on par with the Steam Deck.

One of the biggest advantages Nintendo has over Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go, or any handheld console is its software. They are not available on any other platform. Despite its weak overall visual performance, the Switch has been a huge success for Nintendo. If the company can bridge the visual gap while maintaining the other aspects of the Switch that gamers love, it could be even more successful.
