The best sci-fi movie of the past 20 years returns to theaters--and even better on the big screen!

[Christopher Nolan's sci-fi masterpiece "Interstellar" is one such film. I still remember seeing this awe-inspiring space epic in theaters when it was first released in 2014. With stunning cinematography and punchy sound design (not to mention a great score), I was literally blown away...

Earlier this week, my social feeds were abuzz with outrage following rumors that the scheduled theatrical re-release had been canceled by Paramount and that the studio had destroyed all of the film's original IMAX 70mm prints. Variety magazine reported that "Interstellar" will confirmed that it will be back in theaters on Friday, December 6.

Whether you've seen "Interstellar" or not, this is a holiday treat. Not only is it Nolan's best film to date (which, considering his filmography, goes without saying), but it's also the best science fiction film of the past two decades, delivering blockbuster thrills and deep emotion in a polished and stunning package.

For those of you who missed the hype around 2014's "Interstellar" or just want a refresher on why this epic sci-fi film is so special, here are all the details of this cinematic masterpiece...

Set in a frighteningly plausible future, "Interstellar" brings the audience to an Earth that is rapidly becoming uninhabitable due to global crop failure. But humanity's best and brightest are desperately trying to find a solution to save the human race, even if it means looking to the stars. One of the physicists searching for that solution is Professor Brand (Michael Caine), who works at a secret NASA base.

Brand has an ambitious plan to transport the Earth's population via a wormhole to a new location, but to test the suitability of three planets deemed viable, a team of researchers led by Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) to find a new place where the human species can settle must venture across the galaxy.

The crew's journey is fraught with peril and takes them beyond space and time itself. Faced with each new hardship and the possibility that their efforts may be in vain, Cooper and his friends, including Dr. Ameila Brand (Anne Hathaway), begin to question the purpose of the mission itself and their own motives.

I have rewatched "Interstellar" many times on home media since its debut a decade ago, and while it looks very gorgeous on 4K Blu-ray, it does not fully replicate the big screen experience at home.

There are many sequences in "Interstellar" that deserve to be seen on an IMAX screen, but the iconic scene on an ocean planet with skyscraper-sized tidal waves is a prime example. I also want to go back to the frozen world where Cooper meets Mann (Matt Damon), a surviving NASA explorer. Needless to say, that docking sequence was literally made for a theatrical sound setup.

Of course, "Interstellar" is still going strong a decade later, not only because of its flashy sci-fi visuals and stunning camera work, but also because of its very human storytelling and deeply engaging characters. I look forward to re-experiencing the heartbreaking relationship between Cooper and his daughter (Jessica Chastain), which will probably bring me to tears for the umpteenth time.

Perhaps my only disappointment with this news is that "Interstellar" is still months away from release. (If you can't wait that long, you can stream it on Prime Video.) I would love to see this unforgettable sci-fi epic on the big screen right now. But I've waited nearly a decade for this big screen revival, so I can wait a few more months.

In the meantime, there are still several summer movie seasons left, including my most anticipated film of the year, Alien: Romulus.
