New on Netflix: 5 Movies and Shows to Watch This Week (August 12-18)

There are some gems among the new TV shows and movies coming to Netflix this week.

Granted, one of the gems is not necessarily hidden. Emily in Paris was a Netflix hit show that, despite mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike, garnered a large number of viewers and was nominated for several awards. Now back for a fourth season, the first five episodes will be available this Thursday.

In addition to the hit Netflix original show, there are two other movies of note. The Union, a new Netflix original action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Halle Berry, and J.K. Simmons as a spy team, looks interesting. There is also the Netflix original documentary Daughters. It's about four girls who are reunited with their father in a DC prison for a special dance. The film won an award at Sundance this year, so don't miss it.

More to watch. There's plenty more; here's Netflix's daily roundup of this week's new releases.

Crowdwork is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of telling scripted jokes, comedians interact with the audience and create jokes on the spot. While some comedians excel at it, it is rarely seen for longer than a brief moment in a standup comedy special because comedians cannot always control what happens.

But in "Matt Life: Lucid - A Crowd Work Special," sometimes controversial stand-up comedian Matt Life rounds out this high-risk comedic skill set in a special. Will he be able to keep the audience in Charlotte, North Carolina, focused on the topic of dreams? Or will it quickly turn into a nightmare? That remains to be seen.

"Daughters" is the story of four daughters trying to connect with their imprisoned fathers. The film explores the complex but loving relationship between fathers and daughters as it follows the girls' journey to bring their special Daddy Daughter Dance to the Washington, D.C. prison where their fathers are incarcerated.

This could be the best documentary of the year. It has already won the Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary at this year's Sundance Film Festival and currently has a 100% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a must-see on Netflix this week.

"Emily in Paris" stars Lily Collins as the lead character, Emily Cooper. Created by "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star, the show follows the difficulties Emily faces when she moves to Paris for her new life. The show has plenty of drama, from work screw-ups to scandalous love triangles.

However, the show has been at both ends of the spectrum. Critical response has been consistently mixed, with review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes often receiving scathing reviews from audiences, with an average audience score of only 48%. Despite this, it is also one of the most popular shows on Netflix and is currently in its fourth season. Two of the previous three seasons were nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards. In other words, it is clear that someone likes the show.

"The Union" stars Mark Wahlberg as Mike, a relatively happy construction worker who is content not to leave New Jersey. But one night, his high school sweetheart Roxanne (Halle Berry) walks into the bar, and the next morning, Mike wakes up in London. Roxanne is a spy for a secret organization called The Union, and she and her boss (J.K. Simmons) need an ordinary man to carry out the most dangerous mission they have ever faced.

From the trailer, the film looks like fun, but the two-hour-plus running time raises eyebrows. Hopefully "The Union" will make the most of that time and pack in some action. Otherwise, pause and have a snack.

Ostensibly the middle part of Ti West's "X" trilogy, "Pearl" is a prequel to "X" in 2022 and "MaXXXine" this year. " In this trilogy of slasher films, Mia Goss plays both the adult actress Maxine Minx and the older Pearl, whom we first meet in "X."

In "Pearl," however, Goss plays strictly the eponymous Pearl, a young woman obsessed with the fantasy of becoming a Hollywood movie star. She lives on her family's Texas ranch while her husband serves in World War I. While he is away, she auditions for a touring dance troupe and gets a chance to pursue her dream.

Unfortunately for Pearl, her parents (Tandy Wright and Matthew Sunderland) were not supportive of her ambitions, to say the least. So Pearl decides to take stardom into her own hands. Horror fans will have already seen this film, but it's one to watch this week on Netflix.
