Google Gemini gets more power - and why?

According to a recent APK teardown by the team at Android Authority, Google Gemini may soon receive some new extensions.

The APK focused on code hidden in the latest Google app beta (v15.29.34.29.) and found evidence that six new extensions will be added to Google Gemini soon. Three of these we have already heard about, but the other three have yet to be officially announced.

Needless to say, these extensions will give Gemini access to even more data. For example, the Google Flights extension will allow AI to pull real-time flight information without having to replace the app.

The first and most exciting unannounced extension appears to target Google Home. This extension will allow Gemini to "control smart appliances such as lights and switches. This is a big improvement over the current system where requests must first be made through Google Assistants. This makes any command much slower than it could (and should) be. However, it is not yet clear if the Home extension will allow Gemini to control home automation.

Another extension, like Home, currently features a phone app that passes phone commands through the Google Assistant. This new extension will instead pass commands through Gemini, but it is not clear exactly what else the extension will do. The provided screenshots also reveal another unannounced extension: a utility. This might allow Gemini to interact directly with your phone's settings and apps. The image shows three examples: taking a picture, opening an app, and adjusting volume without pressing anything.

Finally, there are three more extensions mentioned in the latest Google apps beta, all of which we have heard of before: all three were announced at Google's I/O keynote, extensions for Google Calendar, Keep, and Google Tasks, several other AI advancements were announced. However, it is unclear whether these will be stand-alone extensions or incorporated into the already existing Workspace extensions.

Google Gemini may not be as powerful as other AI models on the market, but the company's push for more integration will certainly help fill the gap. However, due to the teardown nature of APK, there is no telling when these features will be released, so we will have to wait for an official announcement.

In the meantime, there is still much more to experience with Google Gemini; here is a list of seven great prompts to try over the weekend to see what AI can do.
