Season 2 of "Squid Game" finally has a release date - and a future for the show

Netflix has finally revealed when "Squid Game" Season 2 will air.

Today (August 1), Netflix confirmed that one of the best Netflix shows will return this holiday season with its highly anticipated second chapter. What better time than Christmas to get sucked back into this twisted K-drama?

The return is still months away, but creator/director Hwang Dong-hyuk promises that "Squid Game" Season 2 will be "worth the wait" (via Tudum).

If this news excites you, you can look forward to more "Squid Game" as Netflix has already decided to produce season 3 (which will be the show's final episode). Even better news is that "Squid Game" Season 3 will be coming to Netflix at some point in 2025, so we won't have to wait another three years to see it.

All of this news was confirmed by a short trailer that looks like a track meet gone wrong. In this clip, several runners run off their marks, only to be overtaken by many in the classic "squid game" green track suits.

The contestants begin to roll on the ground as many panicked runners abandon them. See below:

Concurrent with this announcement, Netflix released a new image from the series (above), revealing that Dong Hyuk had written a letter (published on X/Twitter).

"It's been almost three years since Season 1 had an incredible response around the world and the unimaginable happened. I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the air date for Season 2 and to share the news of Season 3, our final season. On the first day of filming for Season 2, I remember thinking, "Wow, I can't believe I'm back in the squid game." It was almost surreal. I wonder how it must feel for you, too, to be back in the world of The Squid Game after a three-year absence."

"I look forward to seeing the seeds planted for a new 'Squid Game' grow and bear fruit after the end of this story. We will do our best to bring you another thrill. Please look forward to it. Thank you for everything, everyone, and see you again," he added.

While there has been little information about the new season so far, along with this update, a synopsis for "Squid Game" Season 2 was also released.

It says: "Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 is determined to find the masterminds behind the Squid Game and put an end to their vicious sport. Song Ki-hoon uses this large sum of money to fund his search, starting with the most obvious: finding the sharp-suited leading man who plays dakjis on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the path to destroying the organization proves more dangerous than he had imagined.

In addition to lead actor Lee Jung-jae, the film also features the return of villainous frontman (Lee Byung-hun) and recruiter (Gong Yoo) and detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wee Ha-jung).

Also, considering the fate of everyone else who participated in the previous "Squid Game," the new series is Im Siwan, Kang Haneul, Park Kyu Young, Park Sung Hoon, Cho Yuri, Yang Dong Gun, Kang Ae Sim, Lee David, Lee Jin Suk, Choi Sun Hyun, and Ro Jae Won, Not surprisingly, it boasts many new stars, including Won Jiang.

As of this writing, Netflix has not revealed who these stars will be playing, but given some of the subplots in Season 1, it's likely that Giffen's quest for "Squid Game" Season 2 will be laced with heart-wrenching events.
