Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 ignites during endurance test - dust problem

JerryRigEverything is at it again. This time, we take apart the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to show exactly how durable Samsung's next-generation smartphone is.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a redesigned design, and Samsung's latest foldable is thinner and more durable than ever. However, the Fold 6's IP48 rating may have some worried about the phone's durability. Thankfully, we can have JerryRigEverything put the phone through its paces, as he has done with generations of phones. This test will help prove whether the Galaxy Z Fold 6 deserves to be on our best folding phones list.

When JerryRigEverything tests a cell phone, they scratch the screen with a mineral pick of varying hardness to assess its toughness. When testing the internal screen, level 2 resulted in light scratches, while level 3 resulted in deep scratches. For reference, this is a concern because human fingernails also fall into the hardness 3 factor. However, the external screen was much better, with light scratches appearing on level 6 and deep scratches only on level 7.

Another test involves the new hinge and how well it blocks dust. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is covered in dirt, most of which should not affect the device. However, there is a noticeable noise when the phone is opened and closed, indicating that dust is trapped in the hinge. This is concerning given the screen issues caused by debris stuck in the hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. JerryRigEverything also completely disassembled the Z Fold 6 and found a significant amount of dirt.

Disassembling the phone also resulted in one of the most shocking events, as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 began to burn. While disassembling the screen, clear flames and smoke emitted from the phone. But before you panic, I should mention that this seems to have nothing to do with the battery, but instead seems to be the result of damage to the ribbon cable that connects the AMOLED screen. JerryRigEveything, however, stated that this did not happen with older models.

[10] The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is an impressive phone with many AI features and an overall improved design. However, this durability test will not help quash the fears of many customers that the Galaxy Z Fold is inherently flimsy. Only time will tell if the low IP rating will lead to further problems or if people are overly concerned. In the meantime, we have the full hub of the upcoming Google event, which may include the first full look at the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
