Google is developing a Spotify extension for Gemini - here's how it works

Google's Gemini AI is one of the best AI chatbots available.

Currently, a YouTube Music extension is available, but a recent APK teardown by Android Authority revealed that potential Spotify support may be coming.

The Spotify extension, currently in development, will allow users to play music and podcasts via the Gemini app.

AA got this feature working on their device by asking Google Gemini to play a song via Spotify; Gemini processed the request, displaying the YouTube Music panel before playing the song via Spotify.

Gemini can also play music from Spotify in the background instead of launching the streaming service's app.

It appears that some work still needs to be done to make the Spotify extension available in the mainstream, but the fact that it is already accessible is promising.

It is not surprising that Google highlights YouTube Music as the first extension available for Gemini, but it is nice to see another option for chatbots. It also means that if you want integration with Gemini, you don't need YouTube Music Premium; it will be interesting to see if Gemini will block ads.

The YouTube Music extension also works with Gemini desktop, but is still a bit unstable. It is unclear from the teardown whether Spotify integration with the desktop version is planned.

Spotify is not the only extension that may appear in Gemini in the coming months. Other potential integrations include Google Home, phone apps, and utilities. When will these extensions expand AI capabilities and allow Gemini to access everything as Android's default?

As a reminder, APK teardowns help predict what features might be included in the OS and apps. Of course, our version is a work in progress and may yield different results.

It is unclear when the Spotify extension will be released, but it is at least in progress.
