9 New Movies and Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video and More (August 2-4)

This weekend, Netflix, Prime Video, and other streaming services have a slew of new TV shows and movies.

Topping the list is the Season 2 finale of "House of Dragons," which furthers the civil war in the Targaryen family. Debut categories include the British teen mystery drama "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" and the superhero animated "Batman: Caped Crusader." Also returning are Season 2 of Rob Lowe's comedy "Unstable" and Season 12 of the beloved "Futurama."

On the movie side, the theatrical hit "The Quiet Place" will be available for streaming: In movies, the theatrical hit "The Quiet Place: Day One" (digital purchase) and "Planet of the Apes: Kingdom" (Hulu subscription) The film is available for purchase on Hulu. Here's what to see this weekend.

Flames were blazing and blood was spilled in the second season of the "Game of Thrones" prequel. Renilla (Emma Darcy) has recruited three more dragonriders to her side and is ready to take on the Greens. But she still has to contend with a large and dangerous question mark, her husband and uncle, Daemon (Matt Smith). Will Damon and his army support her, or will he try to take the throne for himself? In King's Landing, with Aegon (Tom Glyn-Carney) still bedridden, Prince Regent Aemon (Ewan Mitchell) is trying to burn everything down, much to the displeasure of his mother, Queen Dowager Alicent (Olivia Cooke). This civil war becomes even more acrimonious, and lives are further endangered when dragons are involved.

The BBC adaptation, based on the popular novel by Holly Jackson, was broadcast to great acclaim in the UK last month. Pip Fitz-Amobi (Emma Myers) is a 17-year-old true crime enthusiast living in a small English town. Under the guise of a school project, she sets out to investigate the murder of popular high school girl Andi Bell by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who later dies by suicide. Convinced that Sal is innocent and that the real killer is still out there, Pip teams up with Sal's brother Ravi (Zain Iqbal) to find out the truth.

The 1990s "Batman: The Animated Series" is highly regarded by fans, and its co-creator, Bruce Timm, should be pleased to be behind this new animated feature. The characters have been returned to their post-Depression roots, noir pulp style and Art Deco visuals (no cell phones or computers present). Wealthy sergeant Bruce Wayne had just begun his vigilante work as Batman when Gotham City was plagued by runaway criminals and police corruption. As heroic as his crusade to cleanse the city is, Batman's actions lead to deadly, unexpected consequences. In Season 2, Ellis faces the consequences of his actions. He also devises a series of challenges and mind games for his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe). A prequel to The Quiet Place, the film flashes back to a time before the alien invasion when survivors had to maintain absolute silence to avoid provoking the monsters. Samira (Lupita Nyongo) is a terminal cancer patient who takes a hospice trip to Manhattan. A meteorite falls from the sky and a brutal slaughter by extraterrestrials begins. Eventually, the humans discover that the aliens are attracted to noise, but it is nearly impossible to evacuate completely quietly. Sam works with Eric (Joseph Quinn), a British law student, to find a way off the island, but numerous obstacles lie in their path.

The fourth installment in the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" franchise takes place 300 years after the events of the previous film. Several generations have passed since the reign of Caesar, and apes have become the dominant species. Humans have degenerated into unintelligent, speechless animals. But Caesar's pacifist teachings are now largely forgotten, and the apes have split into territorial tribes. Noah (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee, meets May (Freya Allan), a human woman, and embarks on a harrowing journey to the brutal leader of the coastal tribe, Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand).

The third installment in Ti West's film series, following "X" and "Pearl," sees Mia Goth reprise her role as Maxine Minx, a porn star in 1980s Hollywood, in a horror film directed by Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki) and finally gets her break in the mainstream when she is cast in But when a killer appears targeting young starlets in the same circles as Maxine, she attracts the attention of two LAPD detectives (Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale) and a private detective (Kevin Bacon) with a mysterious client. As Maxine searches for answers, her past comes back to haunt her.

Earlier this year, the latest entry in the "Godzilla" film canon surprisingly and deservedly won the Academy Award for Visual Effects. Godzilla Minus One maintained a high 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and finally made its way to Netflix a few months ago. A black-and-white version is currently available. But this is not a case of just adding filters to an existing film. Director Takashi Yamazaki told the L.A. Times that he believes "Minus Color" is scarier than the original.
