"The Quiet Place": "The Quiet Place: Day One" is a rare spinoff that is as good as its predecessor. Lupita Nyongo plays Samira, a grumpy patient at a hospice center outside of New York City. She makes it clear early on that she accepts whatever time she has left in this world, but reluctantly accepts nurse Ruben's (Alex Wolff) invitation to a field trip that promises a New York slice.

Naturally, this is when all hell breaks loose and we see the first of the havoc wreaked by the franchise's bat-like alien invasion. The survival-horror setup follows many familiar patterns, but is packed with enough genuine terror and heart to make it a must-see for fans of The Quiet Place.

The fourth film in the relaunched franchise, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" jumps three centuries after the death of Andy Serkis' Caesar to a world where apes are the dominant species and humans are marginalized. It is said to be the first film in a new trilogy that bridges the gap between the recent reboots and the original Planet of the Apes.

Noah (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee, is preparing for his coming-of-age ceremony when he crosses paths with May (Freya Allan), a human woman with the same intelligence as him. The two embark on a journey to determine the future of apes and humans. But hidden motives soon turn their desire for peace into a violent power struggle.

The Spectacular Now is one of my colleague Laurie's comfort movies, and I can see why: this A24 acclaimed romantic drama stars Sutter Keely as Miles Teller, a man who is in love with a woman he's never met before. He is dumped by his girlfriend (Brie Larson) without a second thought.

He drowns his sorrows in late-night debauchery and wakes up on the lawn of a strange house with a terrible hangover. This is how he meets Aimee Finecky (Shailene Woodley), an innocent, bookish teenager. But Sutter's self-destructive tendencies test their relationship as he stares into the reality of life after high school.
