The Shadow of the Commander follows Hans-Jürgen Hess, the 87-year-old son of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Hess. At the request of his son and grandson, Hans finally reads the memoirs his father wrote while awaiting his execution and struggles to come to terms with his memories of his father and his father's terrible legacy. Meanwhile, a parallel story unfolds about Anita Lasker-Walfisch, a German-Jewish cellist and Auschwitz survivor who played in the camp's musical band; the two meet face-to-face, along with their respective children, in a moving portrait of humanity.
