'The Boys' Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

Season 5 of “The Boys” has officially been approved by Vaught Industries, or Prime Video. The superhero show, a hit on Amazon's streaming service, just finished season four, but is already set to return for a fifth and final season.

When on earth will it return? Well ...... We have some bad news on that front, but we have an idea when “The Boys” will be back in town. Here is everything you need to know about “The Boys” Season 4. For those who have forgotten, here's a quick recap of what happened in Season 4.

While an official release date for Season 4 has yet to be set, there are plenty of clues to support that it will be released in 2026.

Creator/showrunner Eric Kripke revealed in an interview with Deadline while promoting Season 4 that he started the writers' room for Season 5 “about a month ago, five weeks ago.” This means that writing for Season 5 began (presumably) in early May 2024.

However, just because work on season 5 has already begun does not mean we can expect it anytime soon. In the same interview, Kripki said that it will be “a little over two years” from the start of the writers' room until the first episodes are available on Prime Video.

The show's star, Karl Urban, has essentially confirmed this current ETA for further episodes of The Boys. In an Instagram post after the Season 4 finale was released, Urban said, “See you in 0.2 years (wish it was sooner) for the final season on @primevideo.”

With this information, we now expect “The Boys” Season 5 to be released on Prime Video in Summer 2026. If this schedule changes, we will update our projections.

I won't go into too much detail here, but before we dive into what might happen in Season 5, let's cover some important things that happened in “The Boys” Season 4.

The season begins with the Boys having the full backing of the CIA and President Robert “Dakota Bob” Singer (Jim Beaver). Their first mission. To assassinate presidential running mate and secret spy Victoria Neumann (Claudia Doumit). Not only does it fail, but Victoria's daughter Zoe (Olivia Morandin) turns out to be a super with deadly tentacles that erupt from her face.

It turns out that trying to assassinate Neumann was a good idea. Because she, Homelander, Sister Sage (the smartest person on earth), and a cabal of politicians are planning a coup to overthrow the US government. As a result, Sister Sage joins the Seven along with an alternative right-winger named Firecracker. Firecracker uses her position to destroy Starlight, Firecracker's nemesis from the past, back when they were supes instead of Annie and Misty.

As all this is happening, Butcher learns that thanks to Temp-V wreaking havoc on his body, he only has a few months to live. Butcher is now having a hard time keeping up with his health, as he begins to hallucinate about his former friend Joe Kessler, a CIA caseworker who has been dead for some time now.

Butcher is not the only one with health problems. Huey's father (Simon Pegg) falls into a coma and is revived when his estranged mother (Rosemarie DeWitt) injects Huey's father with Compound V, which falls out of Huey's pocket. This causes Huey's father to go on a murderous, uncontrollable rampage that ends with Huey taking his father's life.

While all this is happening, the Boys discover a virus that can defeat the superhero. Despite the initial complications, Frenchie is able to turn it into a weapon.

And it all comes down to the season 4 finale. A shapeshifter posing as Starlight reveals himself (after Huey agrees to marry her) and tries to kill the president. The shapeshifter is killed by the real Starlight, who is terribly angry with Huey.

Neumann is now vice president, because if the Homelander coup succeeds, he will be the first super-powerful president. But she cools off and tries to defect to the Boys to protect her daughter.

But unfortunately for her, Butcher is now on a super-power rampage. His attempt to get Ryan to help him destroy Homelander ends in tragedy, and Butcher unleashes his Kessler-powered killer alter ego. That alter ego. A tentacled, murderous monster, he tears Neumann in half before his daughter's eyes. [Neumann is dead, Butcher is on the run trying to kill all the supers with a virus he stole from Frenchie, and the Boys are on the run from the Homelander. Sister Sage reveals to Homelander that this was planned all along, that Neumann's death was the president's responsibility, and that the coup was successful. Homelander is not the president, but he is immediately given the authority to oversee the newly enacted martial law, which gives him effective control over the U.S. government. He quickly uses this power to arrest the Boys and capture everyone except Starlight, who manages to escape.

Spoilers for “The Boys” Seasons 1-4 and “Gen V” Season 1 are expected to follow, and possible spoilers for “The Boys” Season 5

Even if after watching Season 4, or reading the above, it feels like the world is coming to an end, You're sane.In an interview with LadBible, showrunner Eric Kripke said, “As far as we're concerned, that (Season 5) is the apocalyptic version of our show.” He elaborated further, saying that in Season 5, “Homelander gets everything he wanted from the beginning. It's about completely remaking America in his own image and to his own whim.”

The good news is that even though all seems lost, we know that the Boys “really need to band together in the fifth season to save the world.” Despite the fact that most of them appeared to be imprisoned at the end of Season 4, they are finally going to take the flight to Homelander. We know those things are going to happen in Season 5 of The Boys, but there are other things that are likely to happen.

First, let's review what was supposedly revealed in the Season 4 finale. It seems certain that Soldier Boy will return, but it is unclear if he will be with Homelander or if he will continue trying to kill his own son.

Speaking of sons, Homelander's son Ryan will obviously have to choose sides in Season 5. Will he fight his father alongside the Boys? Or will he stay with Vaught and Seven due to a combination of his recent evil tendencies, fear of his father, and comfortable lifestyle? It is possible that he will stay with neither, but it seems unlikely.

As noted above, it is almost certain that Queen Maeve is likely to return. The question is, will she regain her superpowers, or will she need to regain them in some way; will A-Train also return to protect his family? While that is a strong possibility, there is also the possibility that he will be out of the game for good. This is because Butcher is trying to kill all the superpowers with a virus he stole from Frenchie.

But there are two supers whose futures are uncertain. At the end of season 4, Ashley takes Compound V to protect herself, but we see that it does not end well for many. Will she survive the effects? If she survives, is she still human? Time will tell what happens to her character, but I hope it will be important.

And then there is Zoe, Victoria Neumann's daughter. She was knocked out in the fight where Butcher killed her mother, and there is a theory that she will kill Butcher in season 5. This theory (h/t Watch Mojo) is based on the fact that Butcher and Zoe have similar powers and that Butcher killed her mother. While not impossible, I still don't believe it.

Finally, one thing I am certain of is that “Gen V” and “The Boys” will continue to crossover; according to Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, season 2 of “Gen V” will likely appear in 2025 likely (h/t The Wrap), and that season of television should tell us a lot about what to expect from season 5 of “The Boys.”
