Audiences can't get enough of tornadoes and Glen Powell's handsome face, making “Twister” one of the biggest box office hits of 2024 The reboot of the 1996 disaster film “Twister” is shaping up to be a blockbuster hit with its highest opening weekend gross of the year.

Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones play storm chasers who track an unprecedented confluence of weather events in the so-called Tornado Alley and may fall in love at the same time. Powell plays Tyler Owens, a charismatic daredevil who posts his tornado chasing exploits to his vast social networking following. Meanwhile, Kate Carter, played by Edgar-Jones, is a serious scientist still reeling from the loss of her best friend in a tornado; the two compete to survey and document the largest tornado in Oklahoma, then work together to mitigate the damage.

Audiences respond to the big action sets and likable characters and are eager for the theatrical experience, including immersive screenings in IMAX and 4DX. Not everyone wants to watch a movie with a crowd (or literally get rained on), so some audiences may be waiting to watch “Twisters” at home. Here's what we know so far about when “Twisters” will be available for streaming.

Given the box office performance of “Twisters” and how important its theatrical release was to its success, it seems likely that “Twisters” will enjoy a healthy box office in theaters. Universal operates under a policy of releasing films exclusively in theaters for a minimum of 31 days as long as they gross at least $50 million on their opening weekend. This means that “Twisters” is not expected to appear on premium VOD until late August at the earliest, and possibly longer depending on its continued popularity in theaters.

“Twisters,” a Universal film, will make its subscription streaming debut on Peacock, a Universal subsidiary. Even Universal films that head to VOD more quickly tend to take about three or four months to reach Peacock. This means that “Twisters” will probably be available to Peacock subscribers between late October and mid-November. After being available on Peacock for four months, “Twisters” will be available on Amazon Prime Video for 10 months, so Prime Video subscribers should be able to see “Twisters” in the spring of 2025.

These options do not include IMAX big screen, Dolby Atmos sound, or 4DX elements.
