The Google Pixel 9 display could outperform Samsung and Apple.

According to a Google inside source, the Google Pixel 9 series of phones could have the brightest display of any phone seen to date.

The news comes from an exclusive article by Android Authority, which confirms that the Pixel 9 series will feature the same Samsung M14 OLED screen as the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the next generation of Google phones will reportedly be much brighter than any other phone using this display.

The report details how bright the new phones will be, with the base Pixel 9 reportedly offering a peak brightness of 1,800 nits. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, on the other hand, are said to feature a 2,050-nit display, far exceeding the 1,400 nits of the Pixel 8 and 1,600 nits of the Pixel 8 Pro. For reference, there are leaked reports that the iPhone 16 Pro with the same display will be at least 20% brighter than the iPhone 15 Pro. We measured the iPhone 15 Pro at 1,550 nits during testing, suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro could be around 1,860 nits. [The Pixel 9 Pro has a 6.24-inch screen, while the base Pixel 9 has a 6.2-inch screen. Finally, the Pixel 9 Pro XL will have a 6.73-inch screen, which is nearly identical to the Pixel 8 Pro's 6.71-inch screen. Otherwise, the screens are relatively similar, with only slight differences in pixel density and refresh rate.

There have been several leaks and rumors about the Google Pixel 9 series. For example, recent rumors indicate that the Google Pixel 9 Pro model will feature 16GB of RAM, compared to the 12GB of RAM offered by the current Pixel 8 Pro. It is also rumored that all models will have the Tensor G4 chip, but its performance may be lacking compared to the best Android phones.

There is some question as to whether increasing the brightness of a phone's screen is useful beyond a certain point, but it is sure to be attractive to some. For more information on everything coming to the next generation of Pixel phones, check out our Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro hubs.
