My relationship with comedic films is complex, and I like them, but only if they contain plenty of horror elements that go hand in hand with a humorous story.

One film that successfully combines these genres is Shaun of the Dead, which I remember appreciating the first time I saw it, with its perfect mix of wit, gore, and pure emotion. Of course, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are also an iconic duo, and their other films Hot Fuzz and The World's End are among my favorites.

So when I heard that this cult classic, which has a near perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, is returning to theaters next month, I knew I had to share my excitement. If you've never experienced “Shaun of the Dead” on the big screen, or somehow never seen it, this is one movie event you definitely don't want to miss.

Released in 2004, “Shaun of the Dead” is a British horror comedy featuring Sean (Simon Pegg), a thirty-something man in a rut. He leads an ordinary life, working a boring job at an electronics store and spending most of his free time at the local pub with his lazy best friend Ed (Nick Frost).

His relationship with Sean's girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) is also not going well due to his lack of ambition and inability to prioritize their relationship.

The film takes a turn when a mysterious disease begins to spread throughout London, turning people into zombies. Sean and Ed are initially unaware of the outbreak, mistaking the early signs of the apocalypse for the normal troubles of everyday life. However, once he realized the severity of the situation, Sean took command and came up with a plan to rescue their loved ones. Of course, his plan involves getting everyone together and taking them to the place he believes is safest: the Winchester Pub.

Having seen the film several times, I can confidently say that “Shaun of the Dead” deserves every accolade from critics and audiences alike. It received a high score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, proving that this horror-comedy is an outstanding film in the genre.

The Washington Post's Anne Hornaday says: “If the zombie genre resolutely refuses to die, then ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ with its subtle visual humor and smart little playfulness, has brought fresh and hilarious life to the zombie form. Let us be grateful.” Meanwhile, Philip Horne of The Daily Telegraph writes: “Shaun of the Dead is an unexpected double delight. An unmissable British film about the undead, far from being brain-dead, it is at the same time a beautifully observed and very funny comedy.

The Globe and Mail's Leah McLaren described it simply as “intelligent, funny, and utterly disgusting.”

Audiences also appreciate how great the film is, with some saying it “may be the best screenplay ever written” and “one of the funniest films ever made.” Audiences also appreciate the film's excellence.

Focus Features has announced that the newly remastered Shaun of the Dead will return to theaters across the country next month. Specifically, the film will be shown on the Dolby Cinema screen at AMC Theaters from August 29 through September 5. Tickets can be purchased here.

Universal Pictures International will screen “Shaun of the Dead” in theaters in the UK and Ireland beginning September 27.

“Shaun of the Dead” is not available for streaming unless you buy or rent it on Amazon or Apple TV. However, I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen. You will not regret this absolutely hilarious film.
