Since the launch of PSVR 2 last February, Sony has been loving PSVR like a flock of chicks forced to share dinner with a fox in the henhouse: the PS5 virtual reality headset is starving for decent software (just like its PS4 predecessor), and the “PS5” is a great example of how the company is trying to make a name for itself in the virtual reality space Except for rare instances like the excellent VR updates like Gran Turismo 7, it feels like the Japanese giant has already given up on its gizmo: Or so we thought
To save the day, Valve came to the rescue
Rumors have been circulating for months that Sony would make PSVR 2 compatible with PCs, and in early June the company finally confirmed that fans of the best Steam games would be able to use the headset on their rigs via the snappily named “PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter” The company confirmed that they will be able to use the headset
The gizmo will be available on August 7, priced at $59/49 pounds, and the day before that Valve will release a Steam app to support the headset and its shiny new adapter Below is a quick breakdown of the minimum PC specs, courtesy of the PlayStation Blog! - But despite Sony's meager software support for the PSVR 2, there's no denying that it's an excellent piece of kit: the 4K display is stunning, the controller is easy to hold, and watching Blu-ray movies on the PS5 is even a cinematic experience
As an aside, the best experience I had with this headset in the five months before I sold my PSVR 2 was watching “Birth of a Star” What the heck The Movie
The Steam app won't genuinely change the outlook for headset owners who play games on a PS5 or a slightly skinnier PS5 Slim, but if you own a version of Sony's blockbuster console and a gaming PC, the prospect of buying a PSVR 2 suddenly look attractive
Steam has literally thousands of VR games that PC players will soon be able to enjoy on PSVR 2, and the undisputed queen of them all is Half-Life: Alyx
I played Valve's amazing VR shooter during the pandemic and it was just that: astonishing
“Half-Life 3” may never be released, but I honestly don't care that much anymore about the return of Gordon Freeman and his legendary Barr
The prospect of being able to play it again on the PSVR 2's stunning OLED headset almost makes me want to buy another Sony headset Almost But for those who own both the PSVR 2 and the best gaming PCs, the first week of August is going to be pretty special
