Netflix Announces One of the Most Interesting Movies of 2024 - 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

Just days after delivering an obscene new comedy about the Middle Ages, Netflix has delivered another scandalous entertainment in the form of a hilarious British film that turns an incredible chapter of British history into a laugh-out-loud small-scale comedy that brings out the best in its expressive, top-notch cast We've got one

If you haven't yet seen Thea Sharrock's raunchy romp and are in the mood for a good laugh despite the fact that it is based on a real-life scandal that rocked 20th century Britain, you're in luck Wicked Little Letters is by far one of the funniest films of 2024 so far

This refreshingly British feature film takes us back to the 1920s and follows a caper that revolves around the search for a secret scribe who is harassing a quaint English town with snide mail It may be a period piece, but “Bridgerton” is not

Now that it's available for streaming, I'm inclined to say that this little gem is one of the best comedies available on Netflix Read on to find out why

Despite having arguably one of the dirtiest scripts I've experienced in a long time, Wicked Little Letters is a fun, cozy comedy based on a true story The film takes us back in time to the 1920s, to the picturesque English seaside town of Littlehampton, where a true story is rocked by scandal of the highest order

Someone in the town has been sending obscene, unsigned letters to residents, and the pious Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) is one of the main recipients Swann accuses her rowdy Irish neighbor Rose (Jessie Buckley) of committing the crime, and the drama unfolds from there

The synopsis released by Sony Pictures reads: “A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and sometimes sinister scandal Based on a true story stranger than fiction, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbors, conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish immigrant Rose Gooding (Jesse Buckley) Edith and the residents begin to receive bad letters written in such foul language that they can't help but laugh, and the foul-mouthed Rose is accused of the crime The anonymous letters cause a nationwide uproar and a trial begins But when the women of the town, led by police officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is wrong and that Rose is not the culprit after all

In case you haven't already seen it on your list of best movies you missed in theaters (so far) or best shows and movies to watch this weekend, here's another recommendation:

“Wicked Little Letters” should definitely be streamed

Thanks to the combination of an impeccably comical cast and a whip-smart, tongue-in-cheek script, “Wicked Little Letters” is a success Who Little Hampton's poison pen is is likely to be solved long before that “mystery” is solved, but it is certainly fun to watch two of the screen's greatest actors face off in this bawdy feast

Critically, the film received fairly good reviews upon its release; on Rotten Tomatoes, “Wicked Little Letters” currently has an 80% critical rating, with the critical consensus being: “Strongly devoted to the humorous aspects of the story Thanks to its cast, Wicked Little Letters is a delightful comedy, even if the mystery at its core is not particularly clever

If some critics did not agree, viewers certainly did Currently, the audience score stands at 92% from fewer than 200 viewer reviews, with phrases such as “hilarious” and “top-notch” appearing frequently, as well as praise for the ensemble as a whole What more could one want?

Still, we're not sure “Wicked Little Letters” is right for you For streaming recommendations, see our guide to the best movies on Netflix
