Just a few weeks ago, Samsung unveiled its new smart ring, the Galaxy Ring However, new leaks suggest that Oura is already planning to fight back with the Oura Ring 4
As discovered by Android Authority, Oura has submitted two new smart rings (OA11 and OA12) for certification From the documentation, it appears that Oura is testing ring sizes 7-13 and a gold design
These details are from a mock-up of the regulatory label, but Android Authority has also found some images of the company's upcoming ring, which It appears to be a ring At this point, it is difficult to tell exactly what (if anything) has changed compared to the Gen-3 model
However, the leak does confirm (at this stage) that the ring will not take design cues from Samsung's Galaxy Ring Instead, it appears that Oura will keep the circular, flat design of the current Horizon version
However, it seems likely that another variant, perhaps following in the footsteps of the flat-topped Heritage edition, will appear; as Android Authority noted, we only have images and labels for the OA11, but there is also an OA12 being tested, which may be Heritage
Although only one side of the ring is visible in the test images, the sensors appear to be flush with the inside of the ring, as opposed to the Gen-3 sensors, which are slightly raised These sensors are reminiscent of the optical heart rate sensors found on most fitness trackers, but we cannot say for sure at this time
However, it would be interesting to see if Oura is making improvements or upgrades to their heart rate monitors The Galaxy Ring has two optical sensors, one for heart rate and one for skin temperature These shine light on the skin and record the time it takes for the light to reflect back
In general, these LEDs are green in color with the most reliable response in any environment However, as reported by The Conversation, red is technically the most accurate This is why Samsung upgraded the bioactive sensors in its new Galaxy Watch to include LEDs of multiple colors
Oura may be looking to do the same thing and increase the accuracy of the Ring 4 compared to the Galaxy Ring Of course, this is just speculation at this point and we will have to wait for further details and for Oura to actually confirm Ring 4 to know for sure
However, given that Oura Ring has already packed a lot of technology into this small form factor, it is reasonable to assume that the next generation Ring will lean heavily on performance upgrades rather than entirely new features For now, Gen-3 remains the most versatile ring
