A deeper dive into the beta version of the Google Play service reveals several UI tweaks, including improvements to QR code scanning; Android phones already have a dedicated QR scanning feature, but have not seen many changes since the feature was first introduced.

The latest APK teardown by Android Authority suggests that a redesign is in the works. As a reminder, the teardown examines beta versions of services like Google Play, which Google could indicate it is working on. However, the feature may not be released, and the final version could be different.

Currently, the Android QR scanner is accessible in Quick Settings. The scanner opens a large enough viewfinder with a flashlight and feedback button; at the bottom of the UI there is a “Scan from Photo” button below the viewfinder to scan QR codes from photos.

The redesign appears to put everything in one pill-shaped frame below the viewfinder. A flashlight and feedback button have been added to the photo-to-scan button.

Everything has been placed in a position where the thumb is easily accessible when using the phone with one hand.

The on-screen text that says “Scan QR Code” now appears in a new pill-shaped frame above the viewfinder. The close button (X) is also gone with the update. Tapping back on the phone is supposed to close the scanner.

A new animation has also been added to the QR code scanner. It may not be noticeable at first glance, as the viewfinder only slightly expands and settles into place. The update looks smooth and clean, though a bit touchy.

Again, this is not immediately available, and since this potential feature is still a beta for the Google Play service, there is no word on when it will be rolled out.
