Sling TV Offers Major Streaming Upgrade for Free

Sling TV is adding free 4K streaming today. The streaming service will begin streaming 4K resolution on Fox Sports broadcasts of the MLB All-Star Game at 8pm ET/5pm ET.

“With live sports now in 4K, we are upgrading the game and giving fans a front row seat to every thrilling moment,” said Seth Van Sickel, Senior Vice President of Products & Operations for Sling Video Services, in a press release. “Get ready to watch your favorite sport like never before with crystal clear action that brings you right into the heart of the play!”

However, there is a catch with some caveats that accompany the new resolution offered (h/t The Verge).

According to Sling TV's announcement, the game will be available to Sling Blue subscribers living in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and other major cities such as Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Seattle. If you live outside of these markets, you will not be able to stream the game in 4K.

Hopefully, other sporting events like the Olympics will be available for 4K streaming in cities that are not considered major markets; Sling TV has not announced whether the service will expand beyond these markets or only affect the MLB All-Star Game. has not been announced.

It also requires a compatible Amazon Fire Stick or Roku device. The device must also be up-to-date. A list of compatible streaming sticks can be found here.

Sling TV will also offer other sporting events in 4K, including the 2024 Paris Olympics and college and NFL football games on channels such as FS1 and ESPN.

Unlike competitor YouTube TV, Sling TV subscriptions start at $40 per month. However, Sling TV offers fewer channels and has device limitations; YouTube TV starts at $72.99, with an additional $9.99 per month for 4K.
