Massive Google Pixel 9 Leak Reveals Camera Upgrades for All Four Models

In the past, Google has announced the numbering of Pixel phones in the fall. This year, the company is rumored to buck the trend with its Made by Google event next month. We'll get our first look at the Pixel 9 line, and all four new phones are reportedly undergoing a major camera overhaul.

This is according to leaked marketing materials shared with Android Authority, where Google is replacing the Sony IMX386 ultrawide sensor on the Pixel 8 with the all-new Sony IMX858. At only 1/2.8“, the older sensor was on the smaller side, so this switch to the larger IMX858 (1/2.51”) should improve the camera's versatility and ability to take photos in low light.

Even better, the outlet reports that the autofocus-capable front-facing camera, previously exclusive to Pixel 8 Pro models, will also be included on the standard Pixel 9. Since a common complaint about the Pixel 8's fixed-focus selfie cam is its tendency to take blurry photos this is a welcome improvement.

The Pixel 9's two-camera rear setup may also share the same 50MP Samsung primary camera sensor and 50MP Sony ultra-wide sensor as the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL, but apparently no telephoto lens. [Most interesting, however, is the 50-megapixel autofocus selfie camera on the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL. The front and rear ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras are expected to use the 50MP Sony IMX858 image sensor, which will help capture clearer selfies. Meanwhile, the primary rear camera should keep the same 50MP Samsung sensor found on the Pixel 8 Pro.

The improved camera is just one of several rumored upgrades in Google's upcoming high-end Pixel phones; eagle-eyed code divers who decompiled a beta APK of the Google App have found evidence that Pixel 9 Pro owners will have Gemini Advanced They found evidence of free access. Google may also add an ultrasonic fingerprint reader to the Pixel 9 series, referring to the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Of course, we'll have to wait for the Made by Google event on August 13 for more details: in addition to the debut of the Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the new Pixel Watch 3 and Android 15 may be seen there as well as the final announcement of the new Pixel Watch 3 and Android 15.
