13 New Movies and Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Peacock and More (July 19-21)

Entertainment is raining down this weekend, with new movies and shows available on Netflix, Peacock, and other streaming services.

The weekend lineup is led by two very different fighting shows. Fan favorite “Cobra Kai” Season 6 returns with the first installment of its three-part finale. Meanwhile, the Roman imperial gladiatorial epic “The Dying” takes a look at the behind-the-scenes and behind-the-scenes world of fighting in the famous arena.

On the film side, the sequel My Spy: Also, Daisy Ridley swims the English Channel in The Young Woman and the Sea. Here are some of this weekend's highlights.

Netflix is now in the habit of splitting seasons of its hottest shows, splitting “Cobra Kai” Season 6 into three parts (the finale is due next year). When the martial arts action drama returns, the Cobra Kai dojo has been banished from the Valley. Sensei and his students must decide if and how they will compete in the world karate tournament, Sekai Taikai. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) must put aside their long-standing rivalry and team up to face more dangerous threats, including Johnny's former mentor John Cleese (Martin Cove).

If you often think about the Roman Empire, this show is perfect. Director Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day,” “Godzilla”) brings the action to the small screen in this historical epic set during the heyday of the Roman Empire, when gladiators entertained the masses. Sir Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian and Ian Leon from “Game of Thrones” play Tenax, the tenacious underworld ruler. They are just two of the many characters involved in the brutal business of blood and sport.

Natalie Portman stars in this thriller set in Baltimore in 1966. The disappearance of a young girl leads to a fateful collision between two women. Maddy Schwartz (Portman) is a Jewish housewife with a secret past who is reinventing herself as an investigative journalist. When Maddy discovers Cleo's body floating in the lake, she becomes obsessed with unraveling her story.

Ahead of next week's kickoff of the Summer Olympics, a documentary series focuses on one of the world's most famous athletes: Simone Biles. The documentary follows her “comeback” after she withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Games due to mental health issues. Since then, Biles has put in the hard work of dealing with past trauma, learning to manage her mental health, and rebuilding her gymnastics game from the ground up. She is ready to make the leap in Paris.

This post-apocalyptic thriller series takes its final journey in its fourth season. After the earth has turned to frozen ground, the survivors live on a train that is forever in motion. At the end of Season 3, Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) and some passengers stayed in the relative safety of Snowpiercer, while Andre Leighton (Dave Diggs) led his followers aboard the Big Alice to explore the town of New Eden. Nine months later, both groups encounter new enemies led by the ruthless Milius (Clark Gregg).

In this animated series based on the Marvel Comics series, more trials await the titular assassin and his ghost mentor Bryce (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) as Bryce (voiced by Jason Sudeikis). The action moves from Tokyo to New York City, where Monkey tries to find a way to escape his life of killing and Bryce tries to repair the damage he has done to others while still alive. One of them is his estranged daughter Iris (Christine Milioti), who grew up swearing she would never be like her no-good father. The other is Eunice (Leslie Jones), a foul-mouthed former agent. But both Monkey and Bryce soon realize that it's not easy to undo the past.

Kerry Washington's “Unprisoned” returns for a second season with more complicated family relationships. Paige is trying to get back into the dating scene. Her father, Edwin, is still trying to make sense of life outside the cell, her son, Finn (Farley Lakotohavana), misses his father, and the three begin consulting a “radical healing coach” (John Stamos) to help them work through their respective issues.

This Korean horror hit returns for a third season of monster mayhem. A showdown looms between humans, monsters, and neo-humans. Hyun-su (Sung-kang) is determined to prevent an all-out war, but chaos breaks out when Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook) declares a special pardon for symptomatic survivors. An unexpected reunion only heightens the tension: long thought dead, Woonyeok (Lee Do-hyun) has returned as a neo-human. The fate of humanity depends on whether they can find a way forward together.

It has been 25 years since the Colombian telenovela “Yo Soy Betty, La Fea” first aired and became a beloved classic. She is on the verge of a divorce from Armando and is struggling with her relationship with her teenage daughter. Then, according to her father-in-law's will, Betty returns to his clothing company, Ecomoda, as president. There she reunites with her former colleagues and faces the difficult task of taking control of the company as Armando tries to win her back.

Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman return as the dynamic duo from the 2020 spy comedy My Spy. Four years after the incident, veteran CIA operative JJ lives a quiet life in the suburbs with his wife and 14-year-old stepdaughter Sophie. When JJ gets the chance to chaperone Sophie's school trip to Italy, he thinks it's a piece of cake for the globetrotter. As if; not only do both JJ and Sophie have to deal with teenage hormones, but they also stumble upon a plan involving nuclear weapons. Once again, they must team up to save the world.

“Women Overcoming Obstacles and Swimming Incredible Distance” could be the next hot new genre film when the third installment follows last year's “Nyad” and this new biopic. Daisy Ridley plays Trudy Ederle, the first woman to successfully swim across the English Channel. born in 1905 in New York City to immigrant parents, Ederle persevered through adversity and the animosity of patriarchal society with determination and grit, rising through the ranks of the Olympic swim team and swimming from France to England to England, swimming the 21 miles to the end of the race.

Rom-coms for the 50s have been thriving recently, including “Family Affair” starring Nicole Kidman and “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields. This time, Harry Connick, Jr. takes a chance on romance as an aging rock star whose album has missed the mark and whose biggest hits are faltering in popularity. Deciding to take a break from his career to regain his luster, John Allman moves to an isolated cliffside home on the idyllic Mediterranean island of Cyprus. But his hopes are dashed by unwanted visitors.

Kristen Stewart stars as Lou, a reclusive gym owner who is also a member of a crime family, in this neo-noir romantic thriller/comedy. She falls in love with Jackie (Katie O'Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who drifts through Lou's small town on her way to a Las Vegas convention; their relationship quickly heats up, but after a shocking event, the two are caught in a stew of love, violence and madness.
