The 7 best new movies coming to Netflix, Max, Hulu and more this weekend

Another week has come and gone. And what better way to unwind than with the latest additions to some of the best streaming services. The only question is where to start.

If you're wondering what to watch this weekend, we've got you covered. Here at Tom's Guide, we've rounded up the best new films that have just landed on streaming. They include Netflix's epic Greek romance “Find Me Falling,” starring Harry Connick Jr. and the bloody, campy, and undeniably queer thriller “Love Lies Bleeding,” starring Kristen Stewart and Katie O'Brian. The first of these is “Love Lies Bleeding.

Hulu offers “The American,” a ballet drama inspired by a true story, and “Bring Him to Me,” a mob thriller about a getaway driver who is torn between a job he cannot refuse. A more horror-tinged film is Peacock's “Abigail,” which is a tale of a young woman who is forced to flee her home in the middle of nowhere, only to find that she has been kidnapped by the mob.

I've always regretted missing “Love Lies Bleeding” in theaters, but A24's ultra-violent, ultra-approachable thriller is finally available on Max. Kristen Stewart is in top form as Lou, a reclusive gym owner trying to escape the control of a criminal family and build a life for herself. She falls in love with an ambitious bodybuilder named Jackie (Katie O'Brian). What starts out as a passionate romance, however, drags Lou into her sordid past and eventually leads to a heinous crime. It seems like a chaotic, bloody, toxic descent into love, and as for me, I can't wait to watch it (for the plot, of course).

This breezy rom-com stars Emmy and Grammy Award-winning star Harry Connick, Jr. as John Allman, a brooding rock star who has just had a failed comeback tour. He retreats to a remote cliffside home in Cyprus to heal his wounds and figure out where to go from here. To make matters worse, he can't escape his old one hit song “Girl on the Beach”. Furthermore, his hopes for solitude are dashed when he learns that his property has become a suicide spot. When fate reunites him with an old lover, he must decide which he loves more, his music or the woman he left behind.

“West Side Story” star Talia Ryder in “American,” a captivating drama inspired by the true story of the first American ballerina to succeed at the elite Russian ballet school, the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, She appears once again as Pointe. At the rigorous and prestigious school, Joy Womack (Ryder) struggles to push her limits and fit in with her classmates. Encouraged by her strict but charming tutor, Tatyana Volkova (Diane Kruger), and the exhilaration of first love, Joy devotes herself to her dream of becoming a ballerina of great renown. But the cost may have been more than she could have imagined.

I was very surprised by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette's horror comedy Ready Or Not. With a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 82%, “Abigail” has been compared to 2022's “M3gan” for its bloody mayhem and dark humor.

A group of criminals led by Giancarlo Esposito kidnap the 12-year-old daughter (Alisha Weir) of a powerful underground figure in order to extort a $50 million ransom. Eventually, they learn that the supposedly innocent girl they have taken hostage is not so naive - and she hunts them down, one by one.

Bring Him to Me is a high-octane celebration of the best and worst of '90s thrillers from Australian director Luke Spark (“Operation Rainfall”). It scored a middling 67% on Rotten Tomatoes' Critics' Ratings, but audiences were kinder, giving it a high 85% despite its low budget, its outstanding cinematography, and its engaging characters.

Barry Pepper stars as an aging getaway driver who is caught in a battle with his conscience when a ruthless crime boss orders him to drive an unsuspecting crew member (Jamie Costa) into an ambush. As he grows closer to his chatty, big-eyed passenger, his morals and loyalties collide and he wonders if he can really pull off putting this kid's head on the chopping block.

“Thelma” has overwhelmed critics with a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also gave it high marks, with an 84% fan rating. June Squibb (“Blow the Man Down”), who plays the lead role of Thelma, offers an inspiring character comparable to action stars of yesteryear for an older generation.

The plot is unusual and revolves around an unlikely older action hero. In a humorous way, every beloved action movie trope is used. Parker Posey as Alan, Thelma's son-in-law, and Parker Posey as her daughter, Gail, also star in the film.

The film was well received by critics, scoring 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unlike “Thelma,” the audience score was higher than the critics, with fans giving it an excellent 98%. Daisy Ridley plays a swimmer born in 1905 in The Young Woman and the Sea.

The film revolves around Gertrude Ederle's (Ridley) rise on the Olympic swim team in the early 1900s and her goal of swimming 21 miles from France to England.
