When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24 last year, the company teased several new AI features that would enhance the smartphone's capabilities One of these impressive features was Live Translate, which provides users with real-time translation between different languages While this feature was hardwired for Samsung apps and devices, support for third-party apps is always on the agenda, and WhatsApp seems to be the first candidate
According to information from @UniverseIce (via Neowin), integration with WhatsApp is well underway, but there is no timetable for when the feature will be included in the messaging platform Samsung has previously mentioned that other apps will also include Live Translate functionality mentioned that it will be included in other apps, but did not specify any particular apps
SamMobile reports that Samsung has not stated which third-party apps will be included in the rollout, but "all popular VoIP calling apps" are expected to be included in the integration
In our review of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, we noted that Live Translate is one of the more useful features of the device, as it can be a hands-free translator during phone calls and text messages and supports 13 languages The Translate feature also includes a standalone interpreter tool for instant voice translation [Live translation is already integrated into Samsung calls and texts, so we don't know exactly how this feature will work with WhatsApp and other third-party apps However, it is reasonable to assume that this integration will extend to WhatsApp voice calls and text messages
We reported in February that this real-time translation feature could be coming to the Galaxy Buds 2, Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, and Galaxy Buds FE At the time, it was reported that a firmware update would allow the Live Translate feature to be used once the Buds model was installed and paired with an S24 device However, there has been no subsequent confirmation as to whether Buds has received these updates
Meanwhile, Live Translate and other Galaxy AI features were also rolled out to Samsung's older models with the latest One UI 61 software update These models include the S23 and S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Galaxy Tab S8 models
With Samsung's Unpacked event scheduled for Wednesday, July 10 EST/Thursday, July 11 AEST, though, we expect more Galaxy AI features to be announced along with new hardware later this week As always, we will keep you updated on any changes or announcements that come our way, but for now, our fingers are crossed that more innovative features, like live translation, will be announced in future Samsung Galaxy devices
