First Trailer for "Agatha All Along" Released - And Now I'm Really Worried About This Marvel Show

I had high hopes that "Agatha All Along" would be the catalyst for my return to the MCU. However, after seeing the first trailer, I am less convinced that the sequel to "Wander Vision" will be a must-see when it airs on Disney Plus later this year.

Of all the Marvel shows and movies that have aired recently, my favorite is Michael Giacchino's 2022 "Werewolf By Night" solo special. It was a tribute to classic horror films and a new corner of the Marvel world, recreating an uneven but fun campy horror tale.

It was a genuine treat (and beloved by critics) and, in my eyes, a signal that Marvel might be interested in steering heavily into a new genre to stave off that most dreaded phrase: "Marvel fatigue." So when Brad Winderbaum, Marvel's head of TV and streaming, claimed that "Agatha All Along" was "really scary," I began to get excited.

Kathryn Hahn was definitely the highlight of "Wander Vision," and the promise of seeing more malevolent magicians was an enticing offer, especially if Marvel wanted to make the jump to full-blown supernatural horror. The first trailer for "Agatha All Along" finally arrived on July 8... And now I fear this may not be the show I was hoping for after all.

There is little evidence of real horror in the trailer, save for a brief glimpse of a bat-like creature in the middle of the film. The only sequence that looks like it might be scary is the possession scene at the end of the film. ...... The same scene is ruined by a dry, yawn-inducing "joke."

I know this is only the first trailer, and I know Marvel always had the potential to release something suitable for all ages, but this first clip failed to make an impact in my eyes: a snapshot of a CGI-heavy set piece and only vague hints of an uninspiring plot. Frankly, it looks like just another average Marvel show.

I'm not necessarily convinced that it will be a flop, but I feel that Marvel has pitched a different show than what they have apparently put together. For now, I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for more footage. After all, there is still a good chance that this could end up being one of the best superhero shows when it arrives in September.

The "Wander Vision" spinoff centers on the helpless Agatha Harkness as she embarks on a mission filled with danger at every turn.

The synopsis for this Disney series goes like this: in "Agatha All Along," the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after being freed from a warped spell by a suspicious goth teen. Agatha begs Teen to take her to the legendary ordeal, "The Witch's Path." Together, Agatha and the mysterious teen put together a coven of desperate witches and go down, down, down "The Road"..."

The series kicks off with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, September 18 at 6pm PT/9pm ET on Disney Plus.
