iOS 18 enables call recording and transcript creation - how does it work?

Call recording will be included on the iPhone with the iOS 18 "Phone" app update, but we may not see the feature until the full release of iOS 18 later this fall. Of course, as Apple integrates AI into the iPhone, it will also include elements of Apple Intelligence.

While there are many third-party solutions for recording calls, none currently exist that are native to the iPhone or phone app; as reported by 9to5 Mac, the new feature in iOS 18 will make this native.

When this feature comes to the iPhone, a new option will appear to start recording during a call. Pressing the button will notify the other party that you are recording, and the call screen will show how long the recording has been going on.

When recording is complete, a transcript is created and saved in the Notes application.

On compatible iPhones, Apple Intelligence in the Notes app will create an AI-generated summary. Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are compatible with Apple Intelligence. Presumably, the entire iPhone 16 lineup will run on the same A18 processor, and that entire series will be AI-enabled.

The AI summary is an extension of the AI features in the Notes and Voice Memos apps as part of Apple Intelligence.

This does not apply to the transcription itself, only the AI summarization feature; any device with iOS 18 will be able to use the transcription and recording features.

The current version of the iOS 18 developer beta does not include this new tool. However, it may reappear in a future beta version or when the full iOS 18 update appears with the iPhone 16 in late 2024.
