If the new rumors are true, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will benefit from a long-awaited upgrade in charging speed.

Despite the switch to USB-C in the iPhone 15 series, Apple limited charging capacity to just 27W at peak speed when using the proper adapter. On the other hand, wireless MagSafe charging has a maximum output of 15W. This is unacceptable when some of the best Android phones are capable of 80W fast charging without breaking a sweat; the OnePlus 12 does.

That may change. According to a new report from Asian site ITHome, the next generation of iPhone Pro models will offer 40W wired charging and 20W wireless charging via MagSafe. This could lead to realistic improvements in charging speeds, consistent with other rumors we have heard that larger batteries will be used in the iPhone 16, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max models.

Indeed, the report states that the increase in charging capacity is a deliberate move to "balance and ameliorate the problem of increased charging times due to increased battery capacity."

At this stage, we point out that these are all unconfirmed rumors and should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, the iPhone 16 series is expected to debut in early September, only two months away. And this is not the first time we have heard these wattages mentioned.

Last month, Paras Guglani wrote in X that he believes the entire iPhone 16 series will offer 40W wired charging and 20W wireless charging. So we have little faith that this rumor will be legitimate.

The downside, of course, is that Apple is unlikely to go back to bundling a charger with its phones. So if you are upgrading and trying to use a 40W charging adapter, you will need to purchase a new one separately in order to benefit from this new speed.
