The Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra announced by Samsung this week have a lot to offer However, charging flexibility is not one of them
Unlike previous models of Samsung smartwatches, neither of the new models has the ability to charge wirelessly with a paired Galaxy phone, like the newly announced Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Galaxy Z Flip 6
Samsung's wireless power-sharing wireless charging feature is a feature that has been included in most previous Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Gear devices It is therefore surprising that Samsung would discontinue this feature
Sammobile reports that the omission was discovered by X user Jordy Verboven, who confirmed that the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra do not support "Wireless PowerShare" from smartphones from smartphones
According to the support page, Samsung stopped this feature because they upgraded the health sensor in the watch Apparently, this changed the shape of the glass at the bottom of the watch and Samsung had to remove it to make wireless charging work According to the support page,
"The Galaxy Watch 7 series uses a new rear sensor design to improve sensor accuracy over previous models As a result, it can now evaluate previously unsupported health-related data points and provide more reliable measurements during prolonged or specialized exercise
"The new sensor design, however, required changes to the shape of the back glass This change increased the distance between the Watch's internal wireless charging coil and the wireless charger, so the wireless power-sharing feature that was available in previous models is no longer supported"
"The new sensor also allows the Watch to be used with a wireless charger
Also, using the older charger will significantly slow down the charging speed and cause the Watch to generate more heat when charging Samsung recommends that users charge only with the chargers that come with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra
The Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra can be pre-ordered from Samsung now (The Galaxy Watch Ultra is eligible for up to $350 credit on trade-ins as part of Samsung's pre-order offer) The watch will be available on July 24
