Kevin Costner bets everything on "Horizon: An American Saga." The Oscar winner calls "Horizon" the passion project he has wanted to make for more than 30 years. When funds were not available, Kosner personally funded the project to the tune of $38 million. As the former star of "Yellowstone," he could easily have turned "Horizon: An American Saga" into a television series. However, Kosner's strong belief in the cinematic experience led him to make four films.

The first film, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, was released on June 28. This epic Western spans four years, from 1861 to 1865, and depicts "the allure of the Old West and how it was won," according to the Warner Bros. synopsis. The next film, "Horizon: The American Saga/Chapter 2," will be released this summer on August 16.

Two things can be said: "Goodfellas" should have won Best Picture over "Dances with Wolves" and "Dances with Wolves" is a great movie. Captivating performances, sensational cinematography, and a memorable score.

The central character in "Dances with Wolves" is John J. Dunbar (Costner), a Union general stationed at a frontier outpost on the American frontier. After meeting a band of Lakota Indians, Dunbar attempts to integrate himself into their culture and learn their language and way of life. Eventually, the tribe respects Dunbar and gives him the name Dance with Wolves. When Union soldiers arrive at the outpost, Dunbar is forced to choose between his duty as a soldier or a new way of life with the Lakota.

Scott Cooper and Christian Bale, who co-starred in the underrated Outside the Furnace, team up for the second time four years later in 2017's Hostiles. Bale plays Joseph J. Blocker, a U.S. Army captain who is ordered to escort a Cheyenne chief named Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and his family to Montana. Blocker initially refuses because Yellow Hawk has previously killed several of his friends and fellow soldiers.

After facing court-martial, Blocker reluctantly accepts the job. Early in the trip, the group meets Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike), a widow whose family was killed by Comanches. The trail is crawling with enemies who only want to kill the soldiers and Yellow Hawk. Supported by visually stunning cinematography and strong performances, "Hostiles" is an effective redemption story in which each character ponders whether he or she can forgive the sins of the past.

Clint Eastwood is arguably the greatest Western star of all time In the early 1990s, Eastwood directed and starred in his last film set in the Old West, Unforgiven. Will Manny (Eastwood), a former outlaw and killer, now spends his days raising his two children. While on a farm, Will is approached by the Scofield Kid (Jaymes Woolvet) with a proposition. He offers to find two cowboys who have assaulted a prostitute. Needing money, Will accepts the offer and recruits his friend Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman).

The three head to the town of Big Whiskey to talk to the hookers. Upon arrival, they realize that their biggest enemy in collecting the bounty is Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett (Gene Hackman), an arrogant lawman who runs the town. Beneath the violence of Unforgiven is a fascinating meditation on manhood, age, and redemption that makes it one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Not everyone can retire at the top of their game, but it is with great pleasure that Unforgiven has become Eastwood's swan song to the Western.

Although not set in the Wild West, "Wind River" has all the qualities of a western with a neo-noir twist. Before introducing the Dutton family to audiences in "Yellowstone," Taylor Sheridan explores what happens when a murder occurs on an Indian reservation in "Wind River." When U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) discovers the frozen corpse of a Native American teenager, he suspects it is a murder. His suspicions are confirmed when an autopsy reveals signs of rape and blunt force trauma.

FBI Special Agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) is called to the city to investigate the murder. Like a fish out of water, Jane teams up with Cory to catch the killer. Wind River is the best film Sheridan has ever directed. It's a harrowing mystery backed by an important message, culminating in a violent and explosive finale.

In the early 90s, two films about Wyatt Earp were released within six months of each other. One of them, "Wyatt Earp," starred Costner in the lead role. However, it is "Tombstone" that is the superior Wyatt Earp film. Wyatt (Kurt Russell), a retired law enforcement officer, and his two brothers, Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan (Bill Paxton), move to Tombstone, Arizona.

Wyatt moves to the town for a quiet life, but is threatened with retirement by the "Cowboys," a group of outlaws. Eventually, this leads to a legendary showdown at the O.K. Corral. Russell plays a fine Earp, but the scene-stealing performance belongs to Doc Holliday, played by Val Kilmer.
