Apple Intelligence is coming later this year as part of iOS 18, Apple's first major attempt to offer AI capabilities on the iPhone. not all of which Apple announced at WWDC 2024 will be available immediately. In fact, some of these features may not be available until next year at the earliest.

However, Apple has not been completely open about what features will be available and when. So those who have compatible iPhones and are eagerly awaiting what Apple Intelligence has to offer should be prepared for an incomplete experience when iOS 18 launches this fall.

But how do we know what to expect? Fortunately, we've done some research and figured out which Apple Intelligence features will not be available at launch. Here's what you need to know.

Siri has long been in dire need of an upgrade, but Apple has pretty much neglected this feature for the past decade or so. Apple Intelligence was a great opportunity to upgrade Siri.

That's right, you'll have to wait until Siri becomes much more useful than it is now. Features like on-screen recognition, the ability to control apps, semantic indexing, and personal content will not be ready until a later date; Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes this will not happen until sometime in 2025.

Thankfully, Siri will still receive upgrades thanks to iOS 18, including a new interface and more natural conversations with users. Apple has confirmed that Siri will be able to understand you better and will offer a Type to Siri feature for when you can't speak. It's convenient, but not as impressive as if you had everything all at once.

Mark Garman also believes that the launch of ChatGPT on the iPhone may not be ready in time for the first release of iOS 18. However, he notes that Apple's language in its marketing suggests that it will still appear by the end of 2024. we'll just have to wait and see what happens when iOS 18 launches in September.

Apple confirmed at WWDC that more chatbot support will be forthcoming - rumors point to Google Gemini and Anthropic support being announced sometime in the fall Apple has yet to say anything official, so this is a launch There is no guarantee that this will happen in the near future - especially if ChatGPT is delayed.

Apple Mail will get some useful upgrades with Apple Intelligence, but according to Apple, they will not be available in iOS 18. Instead, they will have to wait until iOS 18.1 or iOS 18.2.

Improvements to Mail include the ability to automatically organize mail into four different categories. They are: primary, transactional, promotional, and update. Message Summary also uses Apple's AI to scan emails and summarize their content.

This is a very useful feature if your inbox is crowded, but unfortunately you will have to wait a bit longer to try it out.

One of the biggest problems with Apple Intelligence is that it has fairly stringent hardware requirements. As a result, Apple Intelligence is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and not on earlier models. Apple has confirmed that these models lack the necessary RAM to run on-device AI.

Newer models like the iPhone 16 should have the RAM needed to run some Apple Intelligence in the future. But unless you already have a Pro Series iPhone 15, that means you will miss out on everything until you upgrade.

Apple is definitely being cautious in its deployment of Apple Intelligence, and as part of that, it appears to be limiting the functionality to a single language at the start of the rollout. That language is, of course, American English, with few Us and many Zs, which some people may not be comfortable with seeing on a regular basis.

If you are from a region where English is spoken on a daily basis, such as the UK or Australia, you will probably have no problem in the short term. It is not ideal, but at least they should be able to understand what Apple Intelligence is trying to do. Even if some of the words and spellings are different. If you, like billions of others around the world, do not have strong English skills, you are out of luck.

Sadly, there is no telling when that will change. In particular, Apple's confirmation that it will not bring Apple Intelligence to the EU may have spurred the company to add more comprehensive language support sooner.

Although not a consumer tool, Apple has announced an AI-powered coding tool in the form of Swift Assist. Designed as a companion for coding tasks, the tool has the ability to answer programming questions, help write code, and deploy development frameworks. It is intended to allow developers to focus on more important things and ensure "up-to-date code features that integrate perfectly into the project."

Sadly, this may not arrive until late 2024, not when Apple Intelligence and iOS 18 officially launch.
