Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 screen may be significantly downgraded

Recent leaks have indicated that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 may have a downgraded outer screen, despite using the same one as the current Galaxy Z Flip 5.

We recently saw a massive leak from Evan Blass that revealed most of the specs for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6. In that post, it was noted that the front panel of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is listed as an IPS LCD unit.

For reference, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an AMOLED panel on the front panel. This could be a significant downgrade for this device, even considering the few advantages of LCD screens.

The main advantage of OLED screens is that they are more power efficient when displaying black, not only because they dim the backlight like LCD displays, but also because individual pixels can be turned off completely.

This also allows the black color on a screen to appear darker than on other screens, improving contrast between colors. However, LCD panels also have advantages: they tend to last longer than OLED screens because they are less prone to screen burn-in.

Another advantage of LCD screens is that they are much cheaper to produce than OLED panels. This may mean that Samsung has made this choice to lower overall production costs and may avoid the rumored price increase on the next generation Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. However, there is no indication at this time as to whether this price change will be seen by consumers.

A large amount of leaked information has revealed quite a bit about the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6, including details about the camera, which has been upgraded from the Galaxy Z Flip 5's 12MP to a 50PM sensor.

There is also an apparent needed RAM boost on the way, with the new phone coming in at 12GB, upgraded from the previous 8GB. This improved RAM should help power up the Galaxy AI features that will likely be included in the device.

If rumors of a possible price increase prove accurate, this LCD outer screen would be a rather unforgiving downgrade. However, the extended life of the LCD panels may convince some people. What will be known for sure will be revealed at Galaxy Unpacked on July 10.
