5 new Netflix movies over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix will wind back the clock in July 2024 with a fresh slate of movies, including authentic movie classics that will delight subscribers.

The streaming service has added the entire "Back to the Future" trilogy for those seeking nostalgia that still holds true today. Sam Rami's "Spider-Man" trilogy was also made available. And these are just the beginning of the worthwhile films added to Netflix's library this month.

All of the films on this list have scored at least 90% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, which is not a cast-iron guarantee that they will appeal to you, but it does speak to their overall quality. So, here are the new Netflix movies you should be streaming right now...

As its Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% indicates, "American Hustle" was well received upon its December 2013 release. However, its reputation has declined over the past decade as a less-than-gentle reevaluation has branded it "overrated" by many. Nevertheless, I stand by the film. American Hustle is a flamboyant comedy with a stellar cast, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner, and it's a rousing romp from start to finish."

Inspired by a true story, David O. Russell's American Hustle follows two con artists, Irv (Cooper) and Sydney (Adams), who are sent undercover by an FBI agent (Cooper) in a sting operation to catch a corrupt New Jersey mayor (Jeremy Renner) red-handed. The film focuses on Bale and Sydney (Adams). However, the entire operation is threatened by Irv's jealous wife (Lawrence).

Calling "Back to the Future" an 80s classic is like saying Lionel Messi is pretty good at soccer. This sci-fi comedy with a time travel twist is truly legendary, and with good reason. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film will celebrate its 40th anniversary in July 2025 and remains as quotable, thrilling, and relentlessly entertaining as ever.

Marty McFly, played by a young Michael J. Fox, is a dorky but lovable teenager in the small town of Hilly Valley, California, who travels back in time to the 1950s in a modified DeLorean built by fellow scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). When he slips back in time, he finds himself in quite a predicament. When he meets younger versions of his parents, he must play the role of Cupid and make sure they fall in love. In addition, Marty must also find a way to return to the present.

Tom Hanks gives one of his most powerful performances in Captain Phillips, a gripping thriller from director Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne). Hanks plays the captain of a merchant ship boarded by Somali pirates led by the determined Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Phillips tries to protect his crew at all costs, but the pirates plot to get millions of dollars as ransom. What follows is an almost unbearably dramatic standoff between the two sides.

Based on a true story, "Captain Phillips" is one of the most intense films I've ever seen, and it is a huge success in replacing Hollywood cheese with a down-to-earth, gritty tone. This is no "Die Hard on a Boat". Phillips is no action hero. Instead, Hanks plays a brave but ordinary man in an impossible situation with genuine humanity. Not to mention that Abdi is equally brilliant. Captain Phillips is not to be missed."

Before the popularity of comic book movies exploded in the 2010s, the genre's best film was Sam Raimi's (who recently reunited with Marvel to direct 2022's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness") It was the Web Sling trilogy. While the first "Spider-Man," released in 2002, holds a special place in my heart, there is no doubt that "Spider-Man 2" is the outstanding film of the trilogy. It is still considered by many to be the best of Spidey's epic films.

In "Spider-Man 2," Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) confronts Dr. Otto Okatobius (Alfred Molina), whose failed experiment transforms him into the villain Doc Ock. At the same time, Parker struggles more than ever to balance fighting crime and making time for his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) and his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). There's action, there's adventure comedy, and this super sequel is chock full of iconic online memes.

As far as I'm concerned, "Matilda" is one of the best family films ever made. This beloved '90s fantasy comedy was adapted from Roald Dahl's children's book of the same name and directed by Danny DeVito (who also has a small but memorable supporting role). It's funny, charming, surprisingly thrilling (with a couple of clever storylines), and has a great message at its core. You can't help but love it.

Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) doesn't fit in with her cruel family. Just having mindless parents at home is bad enough, but her school principal, Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), is even more evil. Fortunately, she has the support of the beautiful Miss Honey (Embeth Davids), who makes each day bearable. But when Matilda discovers she has magical powers, she realizes she may be able to change her story and fight back against the bullies once and for all.
