Apple's Next "Vision Pro" Headset May Be Cheaper - But May Have One Major Drawback

A lower-priced version of the Apple Vision Pro may be on the horizon, but it will likely undergo significant design changes to cut costs.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple has been working on a lower-cost version of the Apple Vision Pro for years, but Apple is having problems keeping key features while lowering the price. The headset, codenamed "N107" or "Apple Vision" by Gurman, could cut costs in several ways, including one major design change.

One of the biggest changes is speculated to be the addition of a tether cable that connects to an iPhone or Mac. This tethered cable would allow Apple to lower the overall computing power and weight of the Vision Pro, thereby saving on component and manufacturing costs. However, it would mean a change in the overall design of the device, which could result in a very different look from the current Vision Pro.

The tether may help reduce overall costs, but it will likely not be as low as Apple would like, and according to Garman, that would mean pricing between $1,500 and £2,000. Garman said Apple may be planning to remove the EyeSight display feature that allows the Apple Vision Pro to show the user's eyes up front, and Apple Vision may also use a less powerful chip and augmented reality pass-through visuals and inferring that it may reduce the number of devices in the market.

Apple will want to be cautious regarding what it cuts from this device, especially after the new features of VisionOS 2 announced at WWDC. These include the ability for users to share their galleries with other users in real time, a larger virtual display, and a larger virtual display when used in conjunction with a Macbook.

The Apple Vision Pro is undoubtedly a vision of the future of technology. However, the extreme price tag makes it difficult for most people to experience it. While it is great news that Apple is working on a new, less expensive version, especially with the upcoming new feature additions from Apple Intelligence, all sights are set on the iPhone 16 instead.
