Blackmagic Camera App Launches, Turns Your Android Phone into a Cinema-Worthy Camera

Blackmagic Design, which released its Blackmagic Camera app for iOS last fall, is finally bringing this photographer's app to Android phones. The new app is available today (June 24).

For those unfamiliar with the name Blackmagic Design, the Australian company is well known for producing high-end cameras for filmmakers. They also produce DaVinci Resolve, a video editing program similar to Adobe's Premiere Pro and Apple's Final Cut Pro.

The Blackmagic Camera app aims to put the cinematographer's tools into the hands of Android users. Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, said in a press release, "The Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone has been extremely well received since its release last year." We are very pleased that customers with Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones can now shoot digital film with the same ease of use as our professional cameras."

And this is a notable limitation of the app, which is currently only available to owners of Samsung Galaxy S23 or Galaxy S24 phones, and the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 lines. a Blackmagic Design spokesperson told The Verge that the app is available for phones running Android 13 or later, but did not say when or if it would be available for other Android devices.

Blackmagic's camera app is completely free on Android as it is on iOS.

The Android version of the app will have the same user interface as the iOS version. Often the UI changes when an app migrates from one operating system to another; if you need to switch back and forth between Android and iOS, the learning curve is zero.

Apps overlay a heads-up display that shows important information such as focus, exposure, and white balance. Settings can be quickly changed by tapping an item on the display and adjusting it in the menu that pops up.

Users who want to collaborate on projects can sign up for Blackmagic Design's cloud service. Footage shot with the app can be imported directly into the cloud, and editors can import it as needed. The app also has a built-in chat mode that allows users to communicate with collaborators in the cloud about ongoing projects.

The app does not appear to have editing tools, but perhaps that is for the best; Blackmagic Design can focus on creating tools for the photographer. If you need editing tools, check out our favorite photo editing apps that work on both iOS and Android devices.
