Samsung Galaxy S25 chipset rumors are shockingly bold

Samsung is still more than six months away from announcing the Galaxy S25 series, but the rumors are flying thick and fast and, if we're being honest, are getting a bit overblown.

The latest rumor, courtesy of Digital Trends citing a Korean site, is that Samsung may use MediaTek chips in its S25 phones, at least in some regions. It is not specified in which countries this MediaTek-powered Galaxy S25 will appear.

For those counting at home, this is the third chipset Samsung is reportedly considering for its main line of smartphones. It is also the least significant.

The Korean company is rumored to be going all in on the next iteration of Qualcomm's Snapdragon chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which will probably be announced in October 2024. Of course, the price of the new SoC is suspected to be up to 30% higher.

This is based on the fact that historically Samsung has used a combination of its own Exynos chips and Qualcomm's latest processors to power Galaxy phones. Regions such as the U.S. tend to use Qualcomm chips, while other regions use Exynos. It is reported that Samsung will do this again this time, as it did with the Galaxy S24 line. However, Samsung has not always split its chips this way: the company used only Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chips in all Galaxy S23 models.

If analyst Minqi Kuo is right and Qualcomm will be the "sole supplier" of chips for the S25 series, that may happen again. According to Kuo, this is because Samsung is struggling with the 3nm manufacturing process.

Of course, it is also possible that Samsung is reluctant to price Qualcomm's 4th generation chips. One could speculate that MediaTek leaked this rumor in order to try to negotiate a lower price for Samsung's Snapdragon 8 4th generation processor.

Qualcomm's new chip is said to eat up battery power, and Samsung may need to invest in a significantly larger battery for the S25, but it is not clear if that will be enough to separate the company from its longtime chip partner. In particular, the AI capabilities offered by Google and Galaxy AI are certain to be included in Samsung's next device.

This year Samsung announced the S24 line in January. We expect the company to do the same with its S25 devices in 2025. While you wait, Samsung is expected to announce many new devices, including two new foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, a new smartwatch and the Galaxy Ring, at the July 10 Galaxy Unpacked event Follow us for coverage of the ..!
