Samsung announced three new camera sensors, one of which will no doubt be the basis for the main shooter in the upcoming Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus
The three sensors include the 200MP USICELL HP9, the 50MP ISOCELL JN5, and the 50MP ISOCELL GNJ While each is interesting, the ISOCELL GNJ has a sensor size of 1/157", which roughly matches the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus sensor size (1/156")
Samsung has been using the same sensor size since the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, and according to previous rumors, the company does not plan to increase the overall sensor size in the S25 series Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that this is the sensor that will be used in the S25's main camera
Samsung mentioned several improvements to the sensor over previous models, including an anti-refraction layer and pixel separation These are designed to improve light capture, reduce reflections, provide more accurate shadows/dark areas, and improve color reproduction The company also added that ISOCELL GNJs will deliver improved power consumption, including a 29% efficiency improvement in preview mode and a 34% efficiency improvement in 4K/60FPS video [This is not the only camera rumor regarding the Galaxy S25 Recent leaks reveal that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature a 50MP sensor versus the Galaxy S24's 10MP sensor and an improved 3x telephoto camera
We have also seen conflicting reports over the processor inside the phone Some leakers claim that Samsung has dropped Qualcomm as the main chip producer for the Galaxy S25 and plans to use MediaTek, at least in some regions However, other rumors suggest that the South Korean giant may adopt Qualcomm and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 instead
There have been some concerns about Samsung's apparent emphasis on Galaxy AI features rather than making significant hardware changes in its recent flagships Galaxy AI certainly has many features, but the question for Samsung is whether this and future upgrades will be enough to attract customers over more obvious hardware changes
Another question is whether these small upgrades will be enough to convince people to pay the rumored price increase for the new Galaxy S, which many would already consider a luxury item For now, we will have to wait and see what other upgrades Samsung has in store when the Galaxy S25 is finally released at some point early next year
