Google Gemini may soon get a new voice option to fight ChatGPT-4o.

If you have used Google's chatbot Gemini, you know that it can also function as a voice assistant. Unfortunately, unlike Google Assistant, Gemini can only communicate with a single voice. But that may be about to change.

Android Authority's AssembleDebug reports that the beta version of the latest Google app has a "voice selection" option in its settings. This option has two new choices called Ruby and River; Ruby is described as "warm" in US English and River is described as "calm" in German.

Sadly, these voices do not actually sound, so there is no way to gauge what the new versions of Google search voices (or their Gemini-enabled versions) actually sound like.

Assemble Debug also posted screenshots of the Gemini app on their X account, showing off similar options. However, unlike the Google app, this option appears to open an empty page. It is unclear when this will happen, but this suggests that the company is preparing to add a voice option to Gemini in the near future.

It is worth noting that Google Assistant currently has 12 different voice options available in the US, although how many is equally unknown.

Still, with other services like ChatGPT-4o already showing off new voices for their AI, it is not surprising that Google would want to add additional voices to Gemini in the near future. Google needs to hurry up and make these options available to users as soon as possible.

And ideally, they should avoid getting into legal trouble in the process, like OpenAI, which was sued for using Scarlett Johansson's voice without permission.
