Motorola Razr 2024 - 20 years later, are flip phones cool again?

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since the original Razr V3 was released; I've known it so long that I remember it gracing the cover of Laptop Mag in 2004. It's been that long since Motorola reinvented the flip phone with the world's thinnest design.

Now the company is trying to make flip phones cool again with the Razr 2024 and Razr Plus 2024. At only $699, the regular Razr boasts a fairly large 3.6-inch cover display, a grippy vegan leather design in fun colors, and fast charging. Meanwhile, the Razr Plus 2024 ($999) gets the largest cover screen yet with a flip-fold at 4 inches, telephoto zoom, and a more powerful Snapdragon 8s Plus Gen 3 chip.

As you might imagine, AI is front and center on both of these foldable phones, making it easy to call Google Gemini for any task. There will also be Moto AI features to make your life easier and more enjoyable, such as generative AI wallpaper and the ability to record and summarize your meetings if you say "pay attention" before heading into a meeting.

Ahead of the launch of the new Razr phone, I sat down with Ruben Castano, Motorola's Vice President of Customer Experience and Design, and Maria Jose Martin, Director of Marketing for North America, to discuss the features of this new flip phone.

Castano: It's definitely a great productivity feature. Once you record a meeting, you can smartly transcribe it and use it for notes or share it with other colleagues. So it's definitely a very productivity-focused feature.

But there are other AI features that are very simple and spontaneous. For example, a friend gave you a nice bottle of wine for your birthday and you want to remember it. You say, "Hey, remember this"; a year later, "What was that wine again? I want to go back and buy some more." So we cover the whole gamut, including reinforcing people's memories.
