Ralph Macchio of "Cobra Kai" presented an update on "Karate Kid.

One of Netflix's biggest shows, the martial arts-focused "Cobra Kai," returns to the streamer with a blockbuster sixth and final season on Thursday, July 18. Not only did [Cobra Kai] recently celebrate the 40th anniversary of its spin-off, the 1984 original "Karate Kid," but star Ralph Macchio gave fans an update on the new "Karate Kid." (Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso (Jackie Chan, who played Mr. Han in the 2010 remake of "The Karate Kid" starring Jaden Smith, will also reprise his role).

This past Saturday, Macio took to social media to celebrate the big anniversary and to announce that not only "Cobra Kai" but also the new "Karate Kid" film is officially over.

Along with a photo of the actor playing Daniel Larusso, taken by co-star Zorro Maridueña, who plays Miguel Diaz in the Netflix series, Macio posted: "On this day, June 22, 1984, the world met Daniel Larusso. Happy 40th anniversary to 'The Karate Kid'. Most exciting year yet! Just finished the CobraKai series and the new @KarateKidMovie. Epic work coming up!"

Scheduled for theatrical release on May 30, 2025 in the US and Canada from Sony Pictures, "Karate Kid" is a sequel to the 2010 film and stars newcomer Ben Wang as the titular character, Lee Fong. Actors Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, and Wyatt Oleff will also appear in unannounced roles.

According to the Production List, the synopsis for the film reads: "Li is a skilled fighter and student in Beijing whose life is upended when his mother decides to move to Brooklyn for work. Li is struggling with past tragedies and clashes with his mother, a doctor, who has the same tragedy but in a completely different way. Although his mother is opposed to violence and kung fu, Li finds purpose in teaching Victor kung fu and finds himself back in the ring.

The film was originally scheduled to be released on June 7, 2024, but was pushed back to December 13 of this year due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The release date was changed again to May 30 of next year so that it would not conflict with the final season of "Cobra Kai." (After the first installment was released this July, the second will be released on Netflix on November 28, 2024, with the final episode to be released on an undisclosed date in 2025.)
