As told part of more than 45 minutes, "Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown" avoids the origin story of Jim Jones to focus on what happened in his eponymous town in South America.
With the ostensible purpose of building a utopian community in Guyana, Jones's false prophecies began to unravel when clear evidence of his cover-up and abuse was revealed by elopers and outsiders. Becoming more and more desperate, the excruciating sad end to the cult should still be fully understood.
Director Marian Mohamed, who won the BAFTA TV Award in 2021 for his documentary Defending Digga D, gathers eyewitness testimony and rarely seen footage from within Jonestown as he interrogates the beginning and events of that infamous day in 1978.
