The sequel to "Spaceballs" under development at Amazon — and Mel Brooks is on board

It looks like "space ball", fans and "looking for more money" are finally happening. That's according to a new report from Variety, which claims that Amazon MGM is developing a legacy sequel to the 1987 Mel Brooks sci-fi cult classic.

According to Variety, "Spaceballs2" is currently in early development and the plot details of "Spaceballs2" have been wrapped up at the time of writing, but some important things about the flick First and foremost, Mel Brooks is joining the sequel as a producer. It is not the first time he has revisited one of his classics 1; In 2023, the 97-year-old entertainer brought us the 8-part Hulu sketch comedy series "History of the World, Part II," which parodied the historical epic.

Brooks doesn't appear to be behind the screenplay, but it will be written by Josh Gad instead — a duo who starred and produced alongside Brooks and recently collaborated on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." Written by Oh Benji Summit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenhaum, director of "Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar" will lead the project.

If you need a refresher on what happened with the original movie, check out the short "Spaceballs" overview below, as well as Amazon MGM's clips that showcase some of the movies (many!).Moments and some thoughts about what happens in "Spaceballs2".

The original "Spaceballs" movie is, above all, a "Star Wars" parody (though there are plenty of jokes about countless other flicks, such as "Alien", "Star Trek" and "Transformers").

The plot revolves around a heroic space pilot Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his half-man half-dog partner, Burf (John Candy), squandering all of its fresh air mounting a space-based royal rescue, where the leader of the planet Spaceball, President Skroob (Mel Brooks), travels to a nearby planet. Try to steal the atmosphere of Druidia. His plans include kidnapping Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuiga) and holding her for ransom to get through the planet's air shield.

The mercenary Lone Star and Burf owe a lot of money to the Crime Lord Pizza Hut, so when King Roland offers a high reward for the rescue of Vespa, they take the gig and kill Skroob's chief Enforcer, the Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and the man in his right hand, Colonel Sandurz (Jack). (George Weiner) and will be thrown into conflict.

After crash-landing on a desert planet, Helmet cheats Vespa and her droid, the Dot Matrix, and steals them. But at this point, the Lone Star is trained in the way of "Schwartz" from yogurt and uses his new powers to mount another rescue and put a stop on the helmet and Skroob scheme.

If you haven't experienced it yourself yet, you can currently find it in Max.

As we mentioned, we don't know much about the plot. But given that the original "Spaceballs" movie was a sci・fi commitment in the 80s, there is also no word on whether "Spaceballs 2" will be a kind of commitment to everything that has happened in sci-fi over the decades since.

Rick Moranis will return to the sequel. He noted that judging by Josh Gad's comments on Twitter last year, the movie seems to be on the ice for now, with a long pause on "Shrunk," a continuation of the "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" franchise. He might be able to get him on board for "Spaceballs2" because he was able to bring him back for the first time.
