Secret upgrade of iPhone15Pro Revealed in iOS18 — What You Need to Know

The iPhone15Pro and iPhone15Pro Max both offer the ability to record spatial video, which can be used with Apple Vision Pro headsets. According to rumors, all iPhone16 models offer the same features, and Apple may extend these features to other camera apps in the process.

Apple confirmed this news during a coding session at WWDC2024 (via MacRumors). Apparently the company has released an API that allows developers to add spatial recording capabilities to other apps. Even better, it's built into the existing camera framework, so it should be easy for developers to implement.

Spatial video works on the iphone15Pro by combining the main angle camera with the ultra wide angle camera when the phone is held in landscape mode. Capturing video from 2 separate angles at the same time adds depth to the video, and Apple Vision Pro users can play the video with 3D style effects.  The current batch of rumors claims that the iPhone16 and iPhone16Plus will relocate the camera lens to a vertical format. This is expected to be done to enable spatial video recording on both devices, meaning that more people can produce their own Vision Pro-enabled video.

In other words, developers will also have a much larger pool of potential users, allowing them to incentivize them to add spatial video recordings to their apps, and imagine that they can record spatial videos in the Tiktok app and immediately upload them to the feed of Vision Pro users around the world.

However, Ball is now in the developer's court and it is entirely up to them to add spatial video recording to the app. Until they do, this feature will be limited to Apple's own camera app, and only on phones that support it.

So, here's hoping there will be more third-party support by the time iPhone16 launches.
