Apple SharePlay Comes to HomePod, Apple TV, and Bluetooth Speakers - What We Know

Apple's SharePlay is expanding and will support all kinds of new devices, including speakers. Specifically, the Apple HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, and regular Bluetooth speakers will support SharePlay through Apple Music.

This news was announced at WWDC 2024 and means that friends and family will be able to control the music played from these devices. However, we will have to wait until some time in the fall to receive updates related to tvOS and iOS.

Similar to how SharePlay works with Apple CarPlay, with or without an Apple Music subscription, you will effectively be giving someone else complete control of your music playback. You need a valid subscription, and your friend, of course, needs an iPhone with Apple Music installed. But all someone else needs to do is scan the SharePlay QR code with their iPhone.

You may remember that Apple added SharePlay to the HomePod speaker and Apple TV in iOS 17.4 beta. However, this feature was removed before the final release of iOS 17.4. It was not entirely clear why this feature was removed, but now it appears that its enhanced SharePlay has been restored.

In addition to this, Apple announced that Apple Music will now be able to use the iPhone's Taptic Engine. This is primarily an accessibility feature to help people with hearing impairments perceive sound in a different way.

Called Music Haptics, this feature will be part of iOS 18. According to Apple, this feature will work with millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog, and an API will be provided so developers can add this feature to their apps.
