The 7 best Netflix original movies so far in 2024

Among the streaming service's vast library of content, the little "N" logo that denotes a Netflix original film is no guarantee of quality; while it is commendable that Netflix is not afraid to take risks with some of its original films, Netflix cannot escape the fact that many of its films are quite terrible.

In 2024 alone, subscribers have already watched several terrible films, including "Unfrosted" (43% on Rotten Tomatoes), "Atlas" (18%), and "Mother of the Bride" (14%).

However, there are a few gems among the generic rom-coms and schlocky action films. Frustratingly, these excellent films often slip under the radar and do not get the attention they deserve. So, we've picked out the seven best Netflix original films of 2024 (so far), and if you're a Netflix viewer, these direct-to-video films are a must-see.

Netflix's best original film in 2024 is also one of its strongest ever. It is currently the #1 Netflix film in both the U.S. and the U.K. and has an extremely high 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This twisted comedy ranks in my top five favorite films of 2024.

Richard Linklater's "The Hitman" is a wickedly funny romantic comedy in which Glen Powell plays Gary, a somber teacher who works part-time as a fake hit man for the police. Gary plays Glen Powell, a down-to-earth teacher who works part-time as a fake contract killer for the police. Using a variety of phony identities, he engages people who are trying to hire hit men before the police swoop in and arrest them. But when a desperate housewife (Adria Arjona) makes a fake request, passionate sparks fly between the two.

If there is one area where Netflix consistently shines, it is in original documentaries, and "The Best Night in Pop" is one of them. Directed by Bao Nguyen, this feel-good documentary chronicles the recording of the earworm pop song "We Are the World" in 1985. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, the iconic song was certified quadruple platinum and won four Grammy Awards (as well as an American Music Award and a People's Choice Award).

Filled with new interviews with some of the biggest names in music, including Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Huey Lewis, Dionne Warwick, and Cyndi Lauper, "The Best Night in Pop" celebrates not only great songs but the amazing power of music It is also a work of art. "Society of the Snow" is a Netflix movie so realistic that it makes me shiver even though it's June. This survival drama recounts the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the frozen Andes Mountains in 1972, and the harrowing tale of its surviving passengers. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on earth, with no rescue in sight, they face insurmountable and unimaginable odds.

When food runs out and the bitter cold begins to strike, the survivors are forced to resort to the most extreme measures.

"But director J.A. Bayona's impeccable direction and strong performances keep you gripped from beginning to end, and it's no wonder the film was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Charlie Kaufman has written such bizarre films as the cult favorite "Being John Malkovich," "Eternal Sunshine/Spotless Mind," and "Synecdoche New York." 2020. Following the Netflix release of the bizarre psychological thriller "I'm Thinking of Ending Things," "Orin and the Dark" is an unexpected film. This animated fantasy adventure strips away much of Kaufman's trademark surrealism for a more accessible, family-friendly tone.

Showing his versatility, Kaufman spins a feature-length tale that focuses on Olin, the schoolboy protagonist who is afraid of everything but especially the dark, and the living shadow of the dark that appears one day in Olin's bedroom. But Dirk is not here to scare the boy, and his familiar apparition takes him on a magical journey across a dreamlike reality, proving that darkness is not to be feared and that the absence of light hides many unseen benefits.

Euro 2024 opens this week (or it may have already started by the time you read this). But this jaw-dropping film is not about the games themselves. Instead, it is a shocking depiction of the carnage that unfolded leading up to the match.

The match was to be held at London's Wembley Stadium on July 11; the 90,000-seat venue had sold out months in advance, but on the day of the final, some 6,000 ticketless fans flooded the neighborhood and the stadium with the single-minded determination to get into the match no matter what. They flooded into the surrounding neighborhoods and the stadium. This inebriated mob left a trail of destruction and ruined what was to be a historic day for English football. In "The Final: The Final: Attack on Wembley," the headlines reveal the full story.
