5 great movies added to Prime Video that are 90% or better on Rotten Tomatoes

Prime Video has always been one of the best streaming services for classic movies, and after adding some of the best movies ever made last month, the Amazon-owned service will in June 2024 add another selection of must-see films from yesteryear to its Classic Further enhancing the library.

To avoid confusion, when I say "classic films," I am referring to films from around the mid-1920s to the early 1960s, commonly referred to as "Hollywood's Golden Age." During this period, several legendary filmmakers developed their talents and set cinematic standards that are still followed today.

If you like classic films, check out these new additions to Prime Video. Even better, all of the films on this list have received scores of 90% or higher on the comprehensive review site Rotten Tomatoes, attesting to their enduring quality. So without further ado, here are the best classic films added to Prime Video this month.

It's no easy task to stand out in Stanley Kubrick's truly remarkable filmography. That said, there is a strong argument to be made that "Paths of Glory" is the legendary director's best work, which speaks to the highest quality of the film. Based on Humphrey Cobb's novel of the same name and starring Kirk Douglas in a performance that will reverberate through the decades, this World War I film is not a celebration of heroic sacrifice, but sends a clear message about the futility of conflict.

Douglas plays Dax, a French commander forced to protect his men after a suicide mission goes wrong. The general in charge of the operation tries to deflect blame by court-martialing three soldiers for cowardice. In response, Dax agrees to defend the soldiers at their upcoming trial, but it soon becomes clear that the trial is a sham.

"The African Queen" co-stars Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, two of classic Hollywood's greatest stars. Set in East Africa during World War I, Charlie Allnutt (Bogart) is a grumpy steamboat captain who uses his barely navigable ship to bring supplies to missionaries Samuel (Robert Morley) and Rose Thayer (Hepburn).

When Samuel is killed by the German invasion, Charlie agrees to bring Rose back to civilized society, but the snobbish Englishman has no intention of returning home without a little revenge, and convinces the grumpy captain to do his part for the war effort by dismantling a nearby German gunboat They try to do their part. As expected, a thrilling adventure ensues, and the two contrasting protagonists begin to confront each other, but soon romantic sparks fly.

Like the films above, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance co-stars two icons of the Golden Age, John Wayne and James Stewart. The director of this '60s western was also John Ford, adding even more star power to an already potent combination. Wayne and Stewart would later collaborate on two more westerns, "How the West Was Won" and "The Shootist," but "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" was their first film together and is considered their best work.

The film begins with Lance Stoddard (Stewart) attending the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon (Wayne). Then, through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed how these two seemingly very different men came to know each other and how they teamed up to end the reign of terror of a band of thieves led by the villain Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin).

Another western--and there were many westerns released during this period of Hollywood history--"High Noon" was quite unique for its time in that it was depicted in real time. Although its political themes were controversial at the time of its release, the film was still nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four.

The protagonist of "High Noon" is Will Kane (Cooper), a soon-to-be retired marshal in the small town of Hadleyville. However, his plans run into an impasse when a ruthless criminal escapes from prison and sets out to exact revenge on Kane for putting him behind bars. Amy pleads with him to get out of town before the outlaws arrive, but Kane hopes to find an ally before the looming showdown.

Another John Ford film, The Quiet Man, also stars John Wayne, with Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, and Ward Bond. Wayne, however, does not play a cowboy in this romantic comedy. Instead, he plays retired boxer Sean Thornton. He has left the U.S. and returned to his native Ireland, where he hopes to buy his family's old farmhouse and settle down permanently.

When he wins the bid for the farmhouse, everything seems to fall into place, but buying the farmhouse brings him into the cross hairs of local bully Will Danaher (McLaglen), who has long wanted to buy the farmhouse. To complicate matters, Sean develops a crush on Will's sister, Mary Kate (O'Hara), but the aggressive sibling refuses to acknowledge them and, in turn, plots to keep them apart.
