Anthony Hopkins' Roman epic, action-packed first trailer released - "Gladiator" vibe in "Those About to Die

The 2024 Olympics may be upon us soon, but if the bloodshed of modern sports is not enough for you, Peacock's Roman epic "The Dying Ones" is for you.

This new 10-part series takes viewers back in time to ancient Rome (specifically 79 AD) and into the corrupt world of gladiatorial combat, showing viewers another side of the Roman Empire that anyone who has seen "Gladiators" will recognize. The series promises to tell a story based on "an explosive intersection of sports, politics, and dynasties."

Whether it will be one of the best shows about the Roman Empire remains to be seen, but this trailer should satisfy everyone with a thirst for action. Check it out below:

"Those About to Die" was inspired by Daniel P. Mannix's history book of the same name, and the series is written by Robert Rodat. In addition to Hopkins, "Game of Thrones" native Iwan Rheon stars as Tenax, who runs the Roman spectacle gambling ring, and Tom Hughes and Jojo Macari play Vespasian's sons Titus and Domitian.

Peacock's synopsis goes like this: "The Dying" is an epic drama set in the corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competitions, a previously untold aspect of ancient Rome: entertaining the masses and giving the Mafia what they want most: blood and sport, the dirty Explore the business. The series presents an ensemble of characters from every corner of the Roman Empire who collide at the explosive intersection of sports, politics, and dynasties. [The series marks the TV debut of director Roland Emmerich, familiar to viewers from such blockbuster disaster movies as "Moonfall," "Independence Day," and "The Day After Tomorrow."

If this trailer has you eager for action, your wait won't be long: all 10 episodes of "Those About to Die" will be available on Peacock in the US on Thursday, July 18, and on Prime Video in the UK on Friday, July 19.
