Samsung Galaxy Unpacked date leak confirms pre-Olympic release

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked date leak confirms pre-Olympic release

For the past few years, Samsung has been preparing two big Unpacked events to showcase upcoming mobile technologies: an early event to launch the latest Galaxy S series models and a second summer event to showcase everything from that year's foldables to wearables.

The first of these events ended in January with the big launch of the AI-enhanced Galaxy S24 family. Now, reliable leaker Evan Blass seems to have confirmed when Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked Summer 2024 event will take place.

On X (formerly Twitter), the leaker posted a GIF that resembles the familiar countdown clock that Samsung posts on its website in the buildup to big events. This clearly says July 10, 2024.

Although the text on the GIF is in English, the time is listed as 10:00PM KST (Korean Standard Time). This corresponds to 6:00AM EST.

Summer Unpacked on July 10 is much earlier than usual; in 2021 and 2022 it was held in August, and last year it was in July, but still 16 days later than the date proposed by Blass et al. for 2024.

One should not necessarily expect this early start to become a regular occurrence. Apparently, Samsung's sponsorship of the Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11, is having an impact; it would be strange for Samsung to be a major sponsor of a quadrennial sporting event and yet fail to showcase desirable new technologies that will attract millions of spectators. It is strange for Samsung to be a major sponsor of a quadrennial sporting event and not be able to showcase a desirable new technology that attracts millions of spectators.

So what desirable new technology are we talking about?

As in the past, foldable phones are likely to lead the pack--specifically, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Both models will be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for Galaxy and are expected to feature AI in a big way, like the recent S24 devices.

The Z Flip 6 sounds like a bigger upgrade, with talk of a larger cover display, more RAM, and a significant camera boost, but Samsung could have an Ultra version of its Z fold to steal its thunder.

And then there are the wearables. Samsung's Galaxy Watch 7 will have a new processor, better battery life, and possibly a square face.

The Galaxy Ring, unveiled at Unpacked in January and further detailed at this year's MWC, is a subtle fitness tracker and offers wellness features such as heart health monitoring, sleep tracking, and vitality scores. It is available in eight different sizes to ensure a secure fit on the finger.

Blass also believes there will be two different Galaxy Book 4 Edges and two sets of Galaxy Buds 3. The latter will reportedly feature real-time AI translation, which could be a game changer.

Blass is a very reliable leaker, but nothing is certain until Samsung officially announces its summer lineup. If the long-rumored Unpacked dates are confirmed, we will have 25 more days to be sure.
