Netflix confirmed the "Peaky Blinders" movie with Cillian Murphy — here's what we know

Now that Netflix has confirmed that the long-rumored "Peaky Blinders" movie is happening, it's time to wear the best flat cap. And even better, Cillian Murphy is back to star as Tommy Shelby, a self-made man and the iconic protagonist of the hit show.

Peaky Blinders is a British crime drama series set in post-World War I Britain. Known for its gritty storytelling, complex characters and stylish cinematography, the series also captures the essence of postwar Britain. Not only that, but the whole series has an incredible score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix announced this week (6/4) that the "Peaky Blinders" movie will be written by Steven Knight, who has written all 36 episodes of the acclaimed series. Tom Harper returns as director after directing 3 episodes in the first season.

Murphy shared a few words after the announcement: "Tommy Shelby doesn't seem to end up with me. It is very happy to reminisce with Stephen Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is for fans.

According to Deadline, filming for the "Peaky Blinders" movie will begin later this year. The plot is kept under wraps, but while Knight explains more about the franchise's future, what would take place during World War II it would be an explosive chapter in Peaky Blinders' story. There is no prohibited retention. Completely peaky blind in the war."When I first directed Peaky Blinders more than 10 years ago, I didn't know what the series would be, but there was something in the cast's alchemy and explosive writing that Peaky was always a story about a family - and it was incredibly exciting to be reunited with Steve and Cillian to bring the film to a global audience on Netflix. This is the first time that I have seen this video.

Cillian Murphy is again in the lead role, but he will also be an executive producer alongside Caryn Mandabach, Knight and Guy Heeley. Murphy also seems to be down the producer route as he prepares to star in and produce the horror sequel 28Years Later.

There are no plot details, but the film will be a continuation of the series. Season 6 ended with the Peaky Blinders winning after Thomas went through some traumatic events, and it looked like he was riding a white horse in the series finale. This perfect shot has allowed the franchise to continue, and since Netflix has already confirmed the movie, it's more to explore.

IGN also reported that there could be 2 new spin-offs in the franchise. 1 of them is set in 20th・century Boston, and the other 1 could be centered on Polly Gray, Thomas Shelby's aunt.

Given that the film is in a very early development phase, there is no release date, but hopefully it won't be too long until Murphy's Thomas Shelby appears on screen again. In the meantime, check out the best Netflix movies in 2024 or stream all 6 seasons of "Peaky Blinders" on Netflix now.
