Michael B.Jordan offers "I'm a Legend 2" update — but that's not good news

I learned that a sequel to the 2007 apocalyptic survival drama "I Am Legend" is being produced in 2022. At the time, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had signed a deal with Michael B. Jordan and Will Smith to star and co-star in the sequel, and with Akiba Goldsman (who co-wrote the original film) to produce a new film.

We haven't heard much about the sequel in a while, but Michael B.Jordan eventually provided a progress report on the project.  Jordan has just shared progress updates on the new flick, but if you were waiting for the good news, away from the sound of things you can click on, we'll be waiting in our hands before making it to our screen "I'm a Legend 2".

Speaking to people, the "Black Panther" star said, "We're still working on the script and making it the norm," making sure the film doesn't have a release date for now.

It's not all doom and gloom. Even though "I Am Legend2" sounds like it's still in the early stages of production, Jordan is still "really excited" to work with Will on the sequel.

He said, "I don't know exactly where to shoot it, but I'm really excited to be standing in front of the camera with him. Being someone I have really long respected and being able to work with Will is something I really look forward to. I'm really excited.

The original "I Am Legend" was loosely based on the Richard Matheson novel of the same name and told the story of Robert Neville (Will Smith), the last living man in New York City. Most of humanity was wiped out by a version of the measles virus that was originally genetically redesigned to cure cancer.

Those who did not succumb to the virus people either died or turned into nocturnal mutant creatures called "dark seekers." At night, he barricades himself inside his house to avoid detection, only for the company of his faithful hound Samantha.

Here's the ending of the first film, so if you haven't seen it yet, don't read it. spoilers ahead.

Francis Lawrence's 2007 feature ended with neville handing over the treatment to fellow immune survivor Anna. Neville sacrificed himself to take the Darkseekers who had broken into his lab as they fled to take the cure to a survivor camp in Vermont If this is the version you saw, you might be confused about how Will Smith's character got back into business.

Well, that's because the movie follows up with an alternative ending to "I Am Legend" instead. In that ending, Robert Neville realizes that Dark Seeker Alpha was only trying to infiltrate him to recover Dark Seeker Neville, a woman who was kidnapped as a test subject. Realizing that he has become a monster of nocturnal creatures, he apologizes, abandons his studies and surrenders his body before traveling with Anna to Vermont.

In that same 2023 interview, Akiva Goldsman teased that "I Am Legend2" would be set "decades later" than the first film. He also pointed to his fellow post-apocalyptic series, "The Last of Us," as a particular source of inspiration.

Here's the full quote: "This starts decades later than the first one. I'm obsessed with "The Last Of Us," which sees the world not only after the Apocalypse, but also 20-30 years later. You see how the earth takes back the world, and there is something beautiful in the matter, with the man stepping away from being a major tenant and it will be especially visual in New York. I don't know if they will climb the Empire State Building, but the possibilities are endless.

"We trace back to the original Matheson book and alternate endings as opposed to the endings released in the original film." What Matheson was talking about was that the time of man on Earth as the dominant species had come to an end. It's a really interesting thing that we're going to explore. There's a bit more fidelity to the original text," Goldsman concluded.

"I Am Legend2" has no release date at the time of writing. You can buy or rent "I Am Legend" on Amazon and Apple.
