Apple Announces Apple Design Award Winners - Here are our 7 favorite apps and games

It's time for Apple's annual Apple Design Awards winners to be announced, and it's time for the company to honor the best apps on the App Store.

14 winners were selected by the App Store editorial team and curated from a list of 42 finalists. The categories have changed over the years, but the 2024 iteration has 7 categories: pleasure and fun, inclusivity, innovation, interaction, social impact, visual and graphics, and spatial computing.

The awards in each category are given to both games and apps, so there will be a total of 14 awards in seven categories. Winners are defined not by revenue or downloads, but by their commitment to creativity and design. The 2024 winners will be honored at APPLE's WWDC6 10 Developer conference starting from 2024.

Here is a complete list of winners as well as our favorite selection we recommend you check out.

In a world where the term "doomscrolling" ends, Bears gratitude is a great reminder to encourage gratitude in our daily lives. It is a journaling app with hand-drawn art and bear characters to celebrate life.

The supporting app awards stickers representing achievements and mini-inspirational articles.

It features a simple and thoughtful design that encourages you to write when and what you want to do, but hopefully you can write in an honest and acceptable way.

Honorable Mention: The NYT Games app is great if you like crosswords, sudoku and other games, but you can't find it. We are confident that we have achieved this goal.

Oko is a navigation app to help visually impaired people. The user holds their phone and Oko determines when the walking signal is changing with audio and haptic feedback.

Leveraging maps and AI, oko will provide turn-by-turn direction and help you explore the urban environment. Many reviews from the visually impaired praise the function of the crosswalk and say that it helps them feel safer walking in the city.

Honorable Mention: Crayola Adventures is fun, with plenty of options for character diversity, including body shape, pronouns, and skin color.

Cozy games are becoming increasingly popular on all gaming platforms. Lost in Play is a cozy point-and-tap adventure game that follows brother and sister as they explore a fantastic world on their way home.

Full of caring puzzles, but family-friendly.  The artwork feels like a Saturday morning cartoon, gently scratching the old LucasArts Monkey Island to itch.

Honorable Mention: Procreate Dreams, a design tool for 2D animation. Think of it as an upgrade to the original Procreate. Procreate makes great apps, but they've won awards from Apple before.

Crouton is an app my partner uses almost every day. As the app claims, it's really great for managing recipes from websites, cookbooks, and stuff you've written. The app helps to clean up recipes and condense them, especially from the website where the essay is attached to all the ingredients list.

A meal planner that fits into your grocery list feels good. You can also create grocery lists directly from recipes. The UI is easy to understand and quite intuitive.

Honorable Mention: Rytmos, we haven't tried, but the pathway puzzler looks interesting.

Shipwreck is a 3D visual novel that follows a failed screenwriter Junon who navigates a difficult period in her life. Most of the first chapters of the game are free, so you can see if the style and writing suits you.

With eloquent style and well-developed character, we think you will find it intriguing. It's not for those who deal with some unpleasant and sad emotions and are probably looking for a lighter fare.

Honorable Mention: Gentle Streak Fitness Tracker focuses on wellness all around. The UI looks pretty clean and is there when you're ready.

Based on the story of Pinocchio, but much more grim, p Lies coined Pinocchio when the puppets fight an increasingly brutal enemy in a Gothic city It features ferocious action and great graphics. It also seems to work well on modern Macs, making it a good case for gaming pleasure on Macs.

Honorable Mention: Rooms is another cozy game about building and interacting rooms that you and others build. It's just fun.

The spatial computing category is primarily aimed at apps for Apple Vision Pro. However, the djay pro app is available on all Apple devices. It's a fun way to mix music with djs and turntables and interactive effects. It's kind of like building your own electric daisy carnival set.

Honorable Mention: Blackbox is a puzzle game that is specifically for Apple Vision Pro and spreads on a spatial canvas within the headset.
